I have had my set up for about 2 months. A presonus audio box and a mxl 4000. I used to record on an old computer now i just purchased a laptop. It worked fine on the last computer. I have cool edit 2.1, So i just tried it out and its awful. Theres something not right theres way more static then noise and about every second word is cut off. Does anyone have any suggestions

may help

what opsy do you have XP or Vista, if Vista well that could be the start of the problem, also sound card that is the biggest thing I need to know Audio drop outs and noise can be caused by many factors. Some stuff is not compatible with some vista OPSY.How much ram do you have? how fast is the lap top, also considerations. Now if your using Direct X or ASIO drivers hear we go. You need to assure the settings are correct on both. Many lap top sound cards are down right ugly. Also most lap top HD are running at a speed of 5200rpm you must have a fast hard drive one that is 7200rpm if it is not a 7200rpm the slow spinning of the HD can cause audio drop outs due to the slowness of the HD speed. If that is the case go get a external HD that is 7200rpm and most are not, so look close that is a big, big deal in audio recording and video editing.
also try grounding your wall plug in that's what the screw is on the wall plate it is used to ground so you eliminate 40HZ hum and noise.
so You have something on the wrong setting, or have a hardware and system op conflict.Check IRQ settings and where the lap top is assigning your device mainly the re-amp also the pre may need repaired but deal with that last, do a small test if you have a 7200rpm HD open windows recording in your accessories and try a simple voice test in that and see what results you get, if that comes out fine with no noise or humm you need to look at hardware conflict, is the opsy compatible and look at the user manual to see system requirements.
Lastly your mic may have a loose connection, take the head off and see if the wires are in place or loose if so desolder and re soldier the connections that is basic maintenance the same with the mic cable unscrew the top and see if the wires are connected, lose or one may be almost off. again basic soldering will fix that.
