Help with first recording

I've got my DAW set up, and although the recording appears to be working fine, I can't get any sound on playback.

I recorded vocals through a V67 connected to a Behringer mixer into the bog-standard soundcard using N-Track. I could hear and adjust the input through the mixer using headphones, so I'm reasonably sure that the incoming signal is good and real.

On playback, the VU meters in N-Track move, as does the timeline tracking for the recorded track, but I can't get sound out of the headphones or the attached speakers. The soundcard is set up as the record and playback device, all sound levels in Windows ME are maxed out, and the track will save as a file in N-Track.

Any ideas for a frustrated first (well, half) timer?

It sounds like it could be:

1) The out jack for speakers, etc from your card is shot-- did it used to work? Do they work now, but not when the DAW is hooked up?

2) Are the speakers/headphones plugged in? (Don't throw things at me, just gotta make sure, ya know)

3) Did you check the volume faders in Windows or whatever you're using? Perhaps the audio out is muted or turned all the way down?

It certainly sounds like you do have a signal going in. More info is needed to figure out what the problem is. If it's not one of the simple things above it may be a technical issue with drivers etc.

1) I'm running the out jack into my stereo, and I've played CDs through the soundcard, so I'd say the outjack works.

2) Yes, one of the first things I checked.

3) Checked that too, and as CDs play through the stereo and the Windows shutdown noise also plays through the stereo, I don't think that is the problem.

Thanks for the reply. Any other suggestions? Are there any known driver problems with N-Track?

I haven't used n-track yet (will after my current project is over)... does it have an option to select where it will play to? Such as Microsoft Sound Mapper or your sound card? Maybe n-track isn't sending the audio to the right place. If that's not the issue, then it's over hy head ;) .

Just to be sure, it is the WAVE PLAYBACK that will determine the Ntrack volume. So if the CD is playing we know the hardware is okay. Check the wave volume on the windows mixer.

If wave playback is up then it must be something in Ntrack. If it still doesnt work maybe reinstall and see if that helps. These problems can be frustrating. It's usually one simple check box or something that you need to hunt down.
 
I bet it's WINDOWS ME

Well I'm sure no tech but heard that WINDOWS ME is having alot of trouble with recordings, etc.. esp. with now the N-TRACK.
I forgot at what tech,. site I read this but it's been happening alot. Hope this might help ya some, &Good Luck,

I think esactun may be onto something. Did you set your soundcard as the output device in N-Track?

It's under File/Preferences/Wave Device...

Just an idea...
