Somewhere in Space
i've got a TASCAM DA-20mk2,..and sometimes when i mix down to the two tracks available on it,..in the beginning, or sometimes in the middle of the recording i'll get a sound coming into the recording that sounds like a cd skipping real fast ( kinda like d-d-d-d-d-d-d-didge )...now, i make electronic music, and sample some sounds that sound kinda like this, and sometimes it'll land in a spot where it kinda sounds good in the song,..but for the most part, i'd like to get rid of it, because most of the time it'll end up in a spot where i'm doing a really cool sweep on a synth, and it just totally ruins the feel of the song. now,..i have bought a DAT cleaner, and that didn't do anything to get rid of this "digital dddd-sound"...i set all my levels perfect with the mixers i'm using,..as a matter of fact, the recordings sound just like the live sound as when i played the instruments, and i'm really happy with them. is this a matter of 44.1 vs. 48k? i usually use 48k,..never the 32k (long playing mode).
anyone out there ever have this problem?..i'm not that great in the digital world,..ANALOG is in my blood though,..is there something wrong with my DAT recorder?...or am i doing something wrong? thanks.

At a minimum, the machine needs the transport & head(s) cleaned. A DAT cleaning tape might clear things up for a bit but your best bet is to have a pro get inside and hand clean the entire tape path properly with good head and rubber parts cleaners. BTW - you don't ever use cotton swabs on these things. The stray bits of fiber will screw up the head mechanism beyond repair. Use open foam or shammy- tipped swabs that don't shed.

da-20 mk2 problem..

thanks for the reply - RRUSKIN...I guess it's off to the service man!..
because, I've tried several "new" DAT CLEANERS (tape cartrige)..and no luck
Now, to find a service/repair man for a DAT recorder..in my area,..is gonna be another problem. Definitely thanks for the "heads-up" on the cleaning tips though. Much appreciated!
