So i purchased a hip hop beat thats 2 tracked(so its just stereo). The bass is thumpin pretty hard. Whats the best way to lower just the bass down? I know through EQ but how exactly?

Unfortunately there is no easy answer that can be given here as far as EQ. However it could be as simple as just turning down the track. That'd be the first thing I'd try.

If you really think you have to EQ (and since it's a purchased track, I really doubt you need to), I'd try this (assuming you have a parametric EQ). Find the offending frequency by engaging a band on your EQ with a very high volume (maybe 12db) and high Q (maybe 25). This will turn up a very narrow range of frequencies quite a bit. So turn down your monitors first. :) Then sweep that through the bass frequencies - maybe start at 40hz and move up to 200hz or so. Somewhere in there you should notice a huge jump in the bass. At that frequency turn the volume down to -10 or so. If it sounds better to you, then tweak your final DB and Q settings.

But really I'd just turn down the whole track to begin with. The process in the paragraph above might be more fun, but probably won't get you better results.

You might want to putt the whole thing in to an Graphic EQ or the like, and cut with a high Q the 20-40 hz range, this will de-mud some of the song, and reduce some of the bass, it might help.

Knowing only the very limited information supplied and assuming untrained ears, I'd start by trying a low shelf of about -3dB kneeing at about 150Hz,and then using the results to decide whether the shelving a)is kneed too high or too low or just right, and 2)whether deeper or more targeted cuts are needed than the 3dB shelf.

It's easy - listen properly to the track before you buy it.
Do what SSG suggests - ie: to something subtle & then listen to determine where to go next.
In both instances use your ears.

Are you sure the bass is really thumpin' or could it be a poor listening environment? If your room isn't treated for a flat freq response, who knows what you're going to get. Be sure your room is giviing you an accurate listening evironment before you start tweaking things.

If your room is treated properly, then what SSG said is good advice.
