Hi there - I can't remember my password and no one from the site will return my emails, so I had to re-register. Tis pity, i had over a hundred posts.

Listen folks - please help:
I have a Delta 1010 8 input rack unit and card, and I recently was offered a Compaq deskpro computer and monitor for 180 bucks. I want to take my card out of this computer (my main home copmputer) and have another computer solely dedicated to audio and recording.

The specs on this are as follows:
Compaq Deskpro EN
-866 Mhz Pentium III Processor
-256 Mb Ram
-Fast 52X CD Burner
-10 Gb Hard Drive
-17" Dell Monitor - (Sony Trinitron Flat Tube)
-Keyboard mouse - cables

Let me know what you think. I'd be running either Coll Edit Pro 2 or Adobe Audition.

Processor and RAM seem a little weak to me... depends how many track you want to be able to record I guess.

I just checked the M-Audio website fro teh Delta 1010 system requirements, and it says that I should be fine...

I guess we'll see!

.....what else do you do on the computer besides record...if the one your typing on is faster then i'd use that.

I say you are wasting $180.

Heres what you can get for $249 or less:

AMD sempron XP 2200+
256 MB DDR
40GB HD
52X CD RW
KVM Switch (allows you to use a single keyboard, mouse, and monitor with two seperate computers).

Get at least half a gig of RAM... its pretty cheap. I bought for my laptop for $20 from ebay... should be even more cheap for a desktop.

You would be able to record, but not much. I would at least add another hard drive for audio and some more RAM.

You can upgrade the RAM to 256mb for $12.00. Upgrading to a CD/RW would be a nominal charge as well. I didn't check the shipping charges.

Here's this week's Fry's ad: http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4199403
Again, you should be able to upgrade the RAM and CD for a nominal charge.

These are only two places of the hundreds that are competing for your dollar.

Also, 10GB won't get very far if you're recording audio (well maybe it will since you won't be able to play back much more than 3 or 4 tracks at a time :) )
I agree with the others, you'll be wasting your money. If you insist on getting that, put Win2K on it. Wait, I have an idea - What is your current PC? My wife has my old PIII 450mhz which sucked for music but works more than fine for Internet, Word Processing, etc... (it has Win2K on it) Buy a cheapie used PC at a computer show for your everyday/family PC.
At the local computer shows, they have comparable PCs for like $60, add a monitor for $30 (used 17" CRT) and you're in business. I've been meaning to pick up one of those to used as a Linux server to run Apache (currently running on my music PC as a PHP/Web development server)
