Help with a amp mic choice...

I am looking for a good mic that I can use to record guitar from a Fender amp. I play stuff like Brad Paisley, Brent Mason, and Albert Lee (I play that style not that good :D). I need that high end bite but don't want to clip or overload.. Would the standard SM57 work?

The 57

Will probably be OK, it has been used for years. Personally I would go for the EV N/D 408. It can handle very high sound levels, and has good clarity. I have found it to be a very useful instrument mic.

Yes a SM57 will work good. My favorite is the Sennheiser MD421. The Studio Projects B1 also sounds good on my Fender Twin and Strat.

i second all of the above, but i feel the need to point out that the Studio Projects B1 REALLY surprised me on guitar cabs. I've recorded several different Fender amps with mine (Twin, Blues Jr, and an Ultimate Chorus) and been thrilled with the results.

definitely a nice change from the usual sm57.

Make sure we're talking recording here, not live, right? The B-1 is fine for recording at fairly low SPL's in a studio, in fact, excellent. For live, the 57 will handle high SPL's better, and feedback a lot less.-Richie
 
Like the Shure SM57, the Sennheiser MD421 is also great for both live and recording.
 
Use a 57 close up on the grill, and a Royer R121 to capture some room tone. I have had nothing but great sounding guitars with that setup.

Now that's home recording for you. Put a 57 right up on the grill. If you need a little smoothing out, use a $1500 phantom powered ribbon mic, that'll do it. Is my envy showing?-Richie
 
Hey, the R121 is only $1100 :)

You can always stick a U87 in between the 57 and 121 and mix the 3 mics, but it doesn't always work if you can't control it in mix down, that's why I stick with the 57 and 121 combination, it's like magic!!!
