help!!! what do i need to start

i play drums and guitar and want to be able to record. what do i need to beable to record and hook it up to my computer,what would you guys recommond, i was thinking about the fostex mr-8 but im not sure if it will work with my computer, i heard people talking about it not working with anything but windows 98 i have winME, i have a budget of $300.and i have a sm57 mic

With a $300 budget I think of 3 things.
Get a small mixer and use your current audio card in your PC {if you want to use your PC as the recorder that is}
Or, buy a better soundcard with min. 2 inputs and a mic. preamp.
Or a used digital standalone recorder with PC interface.
If you go the PC route, download some free versions of recording software to give it a whirl.
If I had to choose from the 3, I would go with better soundcard with multiple inputs and a trial version of software.

I just looked in my owners manual and the MR-8 DOES work with Windows-ME.
