Help!! addiing outboard effects to already recorded tracks

Was wanting some advice on using a delta 10 10 with an outboard mixer. I want to be able to send the signal from the mixer to the card with direct outs or using inserts as direct outs. But also want to be able to add outboard effects like reverbs delay etc. from my multi effects processerors to already recorded tracks and then send them back into the card to be recorded on new tracks. Is there a good way of doing this so you dont get feedback. Any suggestions on how to do this with minimal amount of repatching. Also any suggestion on mixers up to this task would be helpful.

It sounds like you know what you want to do. What specifically dont you understand?

What is your mixer? Whatever it is go to www.mackie.com They have some great diagrams for mixer setups.

Right now i just have a little 8 channel mixer but just got the delta 10 10 and am working on upgrading everything. The thing that I dont understand is re recording already recorded tracks so i can add outboard effectst to my mixes. Haver never tried doing this so im a little confused. Dont know what will cause feedback and what not. What do u think will be a good mixer for me.

Do you have multi track audio already recorded? If it's just a regular stereo file there isn't much you can do with it.

Connect the outs on the Delta to their own channels on the mixer. Connect the main outs of the mixer to an input on the Delta. While the tracks are playing you will record the input on the Delta.

Use the Aux sends and returns to connect to external effects units.

what mixers

What mixers would help with my set up any suggestions?

If you are using the inserts from your board, I don't think you can have effects inserts or returns, but you could use your outboard effects between the board's insert ("out" ) and the Delta 1010 input. But the way you want to (send a track with "just the fx") you can't do it at least for what I know.

Or use plugins instead of your outboard effects, because that way they are not "printed" in the recording.

Good luck and If you want more details, feel free to ask, as I have a similar setup (Delta 1010lt and Spirit Mixer)

Good Luck

Doesn't seem like a good plan to me. Too many A/D D/A conversions involved. You have to go A to D to record, then D to A to send it back to your mixer, and then A to D again after you've added the effects.

Why aren't you using software effects? There's some pretty good ones out there.

The only outboard stuff that makes much sense to me is a compressor - and in that case you should run it through the compressor on the original recording - before the first print.

Thanks for your help everyone

Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone. I am using some plugins but was curious if there were a way to use the outboard effects that I already own. Still I am looking for good advice on a mixer that is right for me . Are behringers really that bad? Or should I stick with a mackie or something else?

Thanks for all your help guys

There is no real problem with using outboard effects as long as the DAC is worth the trip and I definately wouldn't recomend printing compression while tracking. But we all have our own preferences. I personally like to keep the audio outside of the computer as much as possible.

Just assign the tracks you want to send to the effects unit to an output on your Delta. Connect that output to the input on your effects unit. Take the output of the effects and run it to an input on your Delta. Set the effects mix to 100% wet on the effects unit and record that to a new track on your computer. During the mixdown adjust the amount of effects that you want. You can also just do it live while mixing if you are doing a live mix to a new track.

The mackie and soundcraft M boards are great for home studios.

And yes, Behringer is that bad for most stuff. They have a few good products but their mixers are pretty low on the list. If you don't mind pissing away the cash on a learning tool than they do the job. Just don't expect a killer sound out of them.

My Spirit (by Soundcraft) is very well suited at least for me.

I've heard the M Series are better.
