Help the new guy out

hey everyone.

I'm looking to start recording some stuff, only problem is I'm not at all familiar with any recoding equipment. I don't know what a lot of this stuff does, so obviously don't know what I'll need. So basically I just need to know what's essential to start out with (besides mics and stuff, of coarse). And most of the stuff will involve guitars, bass, drums, and some brass stuff. Thanks for any help!
