Hello everyone.

I am going to up grade from tape to pc recording and i need help.

I would like some one to tell me what i need to buy (and i mean everything, please dont leave anything out)

I will be recording guitars, bass, keys and samples.

I want to run cubase.

Lets say i have £600 to spend and need everything from my £600.

Can anyone help ?

Thanks

Well, unfortunately Cubase will pretty much eat up that 600...
What do you already have?

It looks good, has a bunch of STUFF but is sadly unstable right now...

.

One option would be to buy a "recording bundle" like this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Recording/Computer/Hardware?sku=241481 You get your interface, monitors, mics, cables, and a copy of Cubase all in one shot. Should be within your budget (I believe 600 British pounds equates to a little over 1000 U.S. dollars), and this is going for $899. You'll probably want to add/change/upgrade things down the road, but at least this'll get you up and recording on your PC with a minimum of fuss!

I spoke too soon when I said it was unstable.

I played with it for an hour and a half tonight and find it has a whole bunch of stuff to recommend it...

I was expecting it to have some form of midi editing since it supports DXfx, VSTfx, DXi's and VSTi's so nicely, but instead it just lets you pick the good bits from multiple takes and assemble them into a part which can then be consolidated into a track. Not a bad way to approach it for those of us who can kinda sorta play the keyboard.

It's not perfect though --- it kept exchanging/not saving whole midi tracks on reloading a project. But whaddya want for free?

Sorry, i forgot to say i have all the programs from a friend.

Just need a pc to up load it to and start.

ARRGJHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH PIrates :bird:

WHAT THE BLUE F*$K IS WRONG WITH BUYING SOFTWARE?? IS THEFT OK?

I just want to get started and crack on, when i say from a friend, the cubase was a present from him along with some sample cds.

Do you already own a PC? What do you have already in your tape set-up (mic's, monitors, headphones, etc)?

I believe that

I believe that about as much as I believe Elvis is still alive. If you legitimately did receive them as a gift then great, but I find it hard to believe. I would think u would have mentioned that at the start. So I will assume you are a scallywag pirate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have my guitar, bass guitar, amps, mic, headphones.

I have a copy of cubase and some sample cds.

I want to record music using my guitar and bass, then add the sample strings etc to it.

I have around £600 for the pc, this must include everything.

Anyone ?

Thanks

I think your question has already been answered. You cannot post I have 600, and expect us to give you a perfect package for that. You need to ask yourself some questions.

1. How many tracks do I need? How many do I need to be able to record at once?

2. Do I want everything to be in "one box", Am I ok with having several pieces of hardware to work with?

3. Am I comfortable with using pirated software? Should I buy the full retail version of my software of choice?

on a serious note, use the "search" function.. this has been posted 2000 times.

Well, but the best PC you can for the $, install XP Pro, and put as much RAM as possible in it.
You will need some sort of interface to get the audio in, the standard Soundblaster crap that comes with a computer is not really good enough for recording (it can be done, but the results are less than stunning). I would look into something from M-Audio, the Audiophile 2496 sells for about $100 US and is quite decent. There's other good choices out there too, just be wary of cards that are designed for gaming as opposed to music production.
I'm not sure how much PCs run in England, but in Canada if you have some basic DYI computer skills you could be up and running for that amount easily.

he's right

I built a pretty decent system with parts from newegg.com for 200 bucks minus a monitor which handles all my recording needs fine. I bought a delta 66 off ebay for 130, and I bought adobe audition.

Was the cubase you got from your friend a legal copy that he purchased and is no longer using? Or did he just burn you a copy of his program (if he's still using it, that is pirating, whether he originally obtained it legally or not). Using legitimate software is worth it, even if for no other reason than for having the respect of your musician peers here at hr.com.

Clear that up and then you can expect people to be more willing to assist here.
