HELP!! Portastudio only recording in Slow speed!!!

Ok so I have a question whenever I make a recording on my Tascam Portastudio, it plays back in slow speed Like I'm talking in Sllooowwww Moooottiiooonnn I played with the pitch control but it didn't speed it up, It only slowed it down even more When I turn it all the way to the left it speeds up slightly but not anywhere near normal speed and when i turn it all the way to the right it just slows it down even more So I have no clue as to what to do Can anyone give me a few suggestions before I reprogram it with an Ax?
 
Hi! I have no experience with the Tascam unit that you're using. But since nobody has replied....

In your topic you said that it's RECORDING in slow motion, when in fact it's actually probably recording faster! Think about it. If you were to record twice as fast and then you played back at normal speed (e.g. you use twice as much tape per second to record than you do playback...), what's it going to sound like? Sloooooowwwwwwwww....

Some recorders have the option to record faster because you end up with a better recording (think about your VCR's SP, LP, and EP settings...same deal).

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with what you're experiencing, but it might point you in the right direction. Check your manual and the web and check back here (post this message in the Tascam group).

Look for the Tape Speed Selector. Might be between the dbx and the zero return. Mine has
High/Norm/Slow.
 
But it's still Playing back in Slow Motion I understand about the speed of it recording
but the playback should be at normal speed and it's not I'm quite at a loss
 
Sigh No luck I checked between the DBX and the Zero return and there was no tape speed selector my system is a portastudio 414 and I checked my manual and the only thing it lists is the pitch control errgghh very frustrating
 
The link you listed seems to answer my question But Why did it work fine before? I think I'm going to blame it on the Aliens and try the methods listed so far by everybody
 
Simple question: has it always done this? If not, there's something wrong now...change tapes and check the power supply voltage. Past that, it's probably repair time. OTOH, if you've never gotten it to work right, I suspect pilot error...
 
Let's clear at least this up before you call out the repairman:
You <are> using the 414 for recording AND
playback, right? If you record in the 414 and playback in a regular cassette deck, the sound will always be at half speed. Your 414, if it's like my Porta-07, only goes at double speed. The 424 has the option of regular speed.
 
It was working properly for awhile and then one day I was doing the playback when I got the Slow Motion treatment I do the recording on the 4-track and then do the playback on a regular casette player and that seemed to work fine until this happened
I'll change the tape and check the voltage supply and then clean it and see if that does anything A big thanks for the advice to all of you
 
Ok, wait a minute. I looked up your Tascam 414 and it has no speed selector and ALWAYS records at 3 3/4 ips which is FASTER than regular playback speed on a standard cassette deck (1 7/8). The only way a tape straight from the Tascam would play in a cassette deck is if the deck had a speed selector (which I suppose it might; check).

Your Tascam is probably operating normally. If you want to create a tape that will play on a regular cassette deck, then you will record from your tascam into a regular deck. This process is referred to as "mixing down" to a master.

To prove to yourself that nothing is wrong, take a regular cassette tape and play it in your Tascam. You will notice that the playback is very fast...the chipmunk effect. This is normal and good.
