Help on mixing down (making a master) ?

Ok, here we go... I need to know which direction to go in once all tracks are recorded (dry with no fx or processing) and I want to mix down to CD-R. I want to add compression to the overall mix so as to get a little better control and even sounding mix going, but as some of you know, adding compression after the track is recorded is a bit hard on the Fostex FD-8 without having a patchbay. I just want to add a bit of tightness so that I may get a hotter level to CD and possibly a better sound altogether!!!
If there is any other info any of you might know of that would aid me in this, ALL suggestions are welcome as I try to keep a wide open mind in getting the best results possible!!!! I thank you all and will see ya later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Little Z (STEVE)

Not too sure about the FD-8 in particular, but you could send the mixed signal out the main outputs into the analog domain, through a compressor, then back to digital for the CD.

Not too sure if that's what you're looking for...

Well, I was just wondering if that was an option that would be a good way to get the optimum sound, in that situation. Or if there is a better way to get better results..... Without going gonzo with high dollar gear... Thanks you guys!!!!!

It depends...

If you are just farting around and want hotter levels, adding compression to the final mix can help. Try the RNC for a good quality compressor.

If you want to shell out a bit more (about $1k), the TC Finalizer does multiband compression which helps preserve the integrity of some frequencies while compressing others. The Finalizer also lets you stay in the digital domain.

If you want good quality, send the mix to a mastering studio.

Again, I'm not too sure about the intricasies of the FD-8 and the patch bay thing you were talking about...

I should add that the RNC is a good quality *inexpensive* compressor.
