Okay, I'm stumped, and I really need your help. I just installed a brand-new Delta 66 with the Omni Studio breakout box into my computer, and after a couple of days of fiddling with it, I still can't get the muddafugga to work. I can play back songs that I have already recorded through it, but cannot seem to get any sound from the mic.

Here's my basic set-up:
Dell Dimension 4100
Intel Pentium III processor, either 933 MHz or 1 GHz (it's one of 'em, but I can't remember which and I'm at work right now, so I can't check)
128 MB RAM, although I'm going to upgrade it to at least 256 in the next day or so.
System Chip Set is Intel 815E
Windows ME (yeah, yeah...I know...)
n-Track version 3.1, enabled for 24 bit/96 kHz recording
The computer shipped with a Santa Cruz card, which I've left in because it has a MIDI port (the Omni Studio does not).

Here's the deal:
I plugged the Delta 66 into an available PCI slot, connected the cable to the back of the break-out box, and installed the drivers just as the instructions dictated. The hardware icon is present in the Control Panel, and I right-clicked My Computer and checked the Device Manager, and everything looked okay.

Then I plugged my SM57 into Mic Input 1 using an XLR cable, and turned on the break-out box. Going back to the computer, I brought up the Delta Control Panel and followed the manual's set-up instructions in the Patchbay/Router and Monitor Mixer fields to the letter. I don't want to bore you with the details of that, but any of you who have the Omni Studio/Delta 66 package will know what I'm talking about.

I then went into the Audio part of the Sounds and Multimedia Properties field in my computer's control panel, and made sure that the Delta 66 was selected as the preferred recording and playback medium. I opened n-Track, and selected what I assumed to be the appropriate Delta 66 ins and outs for recording and playback, and...

...nothing. I had already turned the gain on the mic up to the point where the LED light was indicating a pretty good signal, but it's not registering at all in the H/W In 1/2 level meter in the Monitor Mixer. I brought up a tune I had recorded in n-Track, and was able to play it out of the Delta 66 into the Omni box and out through my sound system. So THAT seems to work, anyway.

I've tried re-inserting the card, re-installing the software, reattaching the cables, switching to Mic Input 2, virtually every combination of buttons pressed or unpressed and boxes checked or unchecked, and cannot for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong. This is clearly a job for someone smarter than myself. Can somebody please help me?!?!

Thanks!
ZZ

on the back of the Omni breakout box, there will be 2 aux inputs, each with a button beside them says "to ins"... aux 1 goes to to ins 1/2 and aux 2 goes to ins 3/4. now for some reason, M-Audio insists on shipping this unit with those buttons pressed in. when the buttons are pressed in, then the aux input for that button is active and the other ins (either mic/line for 1/2 or the lines for 3/4) are deactivated. by depressing the button for 1/2 should give you the signal you are looking for from mic/line 1/2.

jdechant, I am in your debt! That was indeed the problem, and the box seems to work just fine now. With this new knowledge I looked over the manual again, and still don't think I would be able to figure that out from their vague instructions. Your advice came at a good time, too; I had passed through the cursing phase, and had entered the gnashing-of-teeth phase. Anyway, thanks again, on behalf of myself AND my Omni Studio, which very narrowly escaped a tragic and violent end.
