How can I set up Cakewalk so that when i am want to record a second track I can hear the first through my headphones? If I add a track to the songs that came with the program I can hear the previously recorded tracks. But, when I record my own stuff and put down the first track, then try to record a second one I cant hear the first one playing. I cant figure this out. Thanks for help.

What Cakewalk program are you using? What sound card?

Sounds strange... when you have recorded the first track, does it play back fine?

What soundcard do you have?

It could be that your soundcard is not full duplex (meaning you can't record and play back sounds at the same time). With the other projects (the ones that work right), does both MIDI and audio play back when you hit record?

It could be many things. You need to explain what hardware you have. Especially your sound card.

The version of Cakewalk I am using is Cakewalk Express 8.04. My soundcard is Creative Soundblaster Live. There were samples that came with Cakewalk and they will play fine when I am recording. But if I record a track from my mic in one of those samples and then try to record another track, the track I just recorded will not play but the prerecorded ones will. So I guess all the MIDI will play..

You must not be recording when you think you are. I'll bet the Mic In is enabled as a "playback" device, meaning whatever's coming in the mic in will be added to whatever is being played out the outputs, but disabled as a recording device, meaning nothing from the Mic In is being saved to disk.

See this article on the Cakewalk site:

can you simply playback a single track after you record and hear it?

if yes, but you can not hear it when trying to record a second track, then you may not have full duplex set up on your soundcard.

I just realized that your terminology might have confused me. When one says "samples" in this context, people immediately think of audio samples. But do you mean sample MIDI files? That is, are you playing back just MIDI tracks while you attempt to record your audio tracks?

AlChuck you were right about my mic being enabled as playback but I changed it to recording and that did not help. When I said samples, I meant examples that came with the program that are MIDI. Sorry about that. How can I find out if my soundcard is full duplex?

If it's a SoundBlaster Live, it is full duplex.

Cakewalk has a setting that can disable full-duplex operation, though... that's what crosstudio was alluding to. Not sure where it's located but the Help system or manual will surely say.
