HELP! Need opinions on software please!

This is my first visit to this site. I have done most of my recording at professional studios and at home on a Tascam 488 Portastudio run on cassette. I want to learn about how to record through my computer and don't have a clue as to the first step. Some people have suggested buying Cakewalk. Can someone give me opinions on software and on exactly what I need/how to start up? I need excellent CD quality but I don't have a lot of money. What a shock. Thanks a lot!!

Download the free demos... Cakewalk, Vegas Pro, Cool Edit Pro...N-Track... These are all good for beginners. N-Track is prolly the best (cheapest) way to get into the swing of things.

firstly... you should find out your computers specifications if you dont already know... vegas wont do you any good if you computer doesnt have enough power to run the application.. for demos try :

DL their echo reporter, it can give you a good idea of how many track you can record/playback.

I hope your computer is either a Mac or PC, if PC then you better have an intel processor. They work the best for recording.
