I just turned my friend onto Reaper, but he is SOL getting started
New Dell i5 quad core 2.5 intel, Win7/64 & SB Xfi PCI-X soundcard
ASIO4ALL doesn't even work
Nothing seems to work to recognize the Inputs, front or back.
He tried Reaper a few months back with an old Celeron PC & SB = no issues

Does anyone have any ideas ? SB Drivers ?

Sounds to me like there is some driver issues there.

Creative = gamer. Many problems will magically disappear when he gets a real ASIO soundcard.

Here's a good guide and tested suggestions that WORK: http://www.tweakheadz.com/soundcards_for_the_home_studio.htm
(you'll want to bookmark and read through all of Tweak's Guide while you're there...)

Another good article: Choosing an audio interface - http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep08/articles/audiointerfaces.htm
that's no help. He's not willing to to invest any more on a second soundcard. I have told him already what you're highlighting. This is a serious issue. The soundcard has 24/96 Input capabilities, but something between the Creative Xfi drivers, Win 7/64 or something means the two sets of Line In's are not seen via any recording software. His webcam mic, yes. SB XFI, No.
There has to be a solution.

Yeah there is and I gave you help. If you had a VW and wanted to run in the Indy500 just stamping your feet and saying "there MUST be a solution" is not a solution.

Sell the gamer Creative card and get a real one.

Creative's issues have been known for a decade, that's why we suggest that you avoid the brand....

Not trying to stir anything, Tim. I have used Creative SB's before myself (lovely Niagara Falls in the background when recording + 160ms latency = POS) However, he couldn't get squat of a sound coming in.
The soundcard must be able to pickup Line In, but I hear you ... SB = POS & don't expect miracle. I told him that before he got that system.
Well, he sort of got things working. 240ms latency.

Currently, I am using a Tascam M-164UF mixer with built-in USB 2.0 firing channels 1 to 10, FX1/2, Sub L/R Stereo L/R = 16 at 24/48 and 3.6ms latency.

I told him he should look at USB Line 6 or something similar with a guitar and mic in. Low latency and will work right out of the box. And as soon as he wants to record, change the device to USB Audio. When he wants to play "games" use the SB. But nooooooo, he won't invest $100 to get it to work
