ok it is already clear that i have already bitten off more than i can chew here, but rather than give it up and go back to the mundane world of playing guitar i'm going to stick with this and learn it.

here's the way of things. i have a behringer 2004 mixer (8 tracks) (i know it's a behringer, stop snickering) and an echo mia in my mac g3. now here's my question because neither manual covers this very well. i've got all these crazy outs and ins on the mixer and four analog and 2 digital RCA ins/outs on the card. what crazy outs and ins on the mixer should go to which ins and outs on the mia? i can expand on the the layout of ins/outs on the mixer, but i assume this question is so terribly basic that it isn't necessary.

I believe on that mixer you can use the inserts on the mic pre channels as line outs. You have to use an odd cable to do it though, I think a TRS on one end and just TS on the other, if I understood how it was explained to me correctly.

 @ elevate... I've never seen that before... very creative. ?

I'd put the outs of the 1,2,3,4, etc. channels to the 1,2,3,4, etc. inputs on your sound card. That way channel 1 on the mixer is channel one for the soundcard. Pretty simple.

Take outs 1 and 2 from the soundcard and run them into channels 7 and 8 of your mixer. These will be the channels that you monitor your mix from. Alternately, if your mixer has a stereo line input, I'd use that for monitoring.

I've never had more than 2 outs, so I can't make any suggestions for the other 2 outs.

There is more you can do with those crazy ins and outs, but that should get you started. :)

Take care,
Chris

Lots of small mixers don't have "outs" for individual channels. If that's the case, then elevate is on to it, if the mixer has channel inserts.

The send on an insert is on the ring, so you either wire the insert end "backwards" or half-insert the cable such that the male tip connects with the female ring. Ooh kinky.

Slackmaster 2000

On the small Mackies you can use the Inserts as channel outs by only inserting the 1/4" plug to the first click ("half inserting" in Slack language).

Don't know if that's the case with the Behringers, but your manual should tell you.

you guys didn't quite get it

ok, what i really need is to get the signal from all eight inputs on the mixer to go into the card, but the card only has two analog inputs. so i'd be recording, basically, one stereo track from what's coming in from all eight inputs (or whatever number of ins on the mixer i am using). let me describe the equpiment a little, maybe it will help. the sound card is an echo mia, it has two quarter inch ins, two quarter inch outs, and an rca in/out. the mixer is a behringer eurorack 2004A. there are two "2-track in out" rcas labeled "tape in L/R" and "tape out L/R". there are two quarter inches labelded "CTRL R OUT L/R". There are "STEREO AUX RETURNS" and "STEREO AUX SENDS" which are also 1/4 inch. let's see.. there are also two 1/4 inches labeled "MAIN OUTPUT L/R", two 1/4 inches labeled "ALT OUTPUTS R/4 L/3" and two XLR "MAIN OUTPUT (BALANCED R/L)". i need to know what cables go where from mixer to sound card and vice versa.

put your main mix outs into your cards ins. put your cards outs, into one of your mixer's stereo channels. use that line as the alt 3-4 so you can monitor.
