Hi guys,

The other day I decided to go back to tape recording, mostly because the concept of clean, quiet digital recording goes completely out the window when in the same room you have a laptop that sounds like it's generating power for the whole neighbourhood! Well, that's my current situation anyway.

To the point, I have a midistudio 644 with no manual = me scratching my head trying to route tracks, although I'm slowly getting my head round it. Does anyone here own a 644 (and know how to use it)?

First of all, can anyone tell me how to save new scenes? I've tried all different combos of buttons with no luck.

Second, to record channel 1 to track 1 you need to assign it to group 1 right? But group 1-2 acts as left and right channel through the monitor out so you can't pan the channel, so how do you set the scene to record channels 1-4 to tracks 1-4 and have them panned as mono channels?
For playback I set inputs 1-4 to Tape but track 1 still goes to left channel, track 2 to right etc. I suppose if I could save my own scenes this might not be a problem.

If someone would kindly explain these two problems of mine, or if they have the manual, very kindly scan a few pages regarding mixer routing and share 'em I would be soo so grateful. I've searched about and I know the manual isn't online anywhere.

Frankly I'm amazed at how complicated a 4-tracker can be, I mean I just want to record 4 inputs to 4 tracks but this groups thing is throwing me right off somehow.

Cheers people!

Hi.

Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with the 644 to give you a step by step tutorial. However, I spotted this 644 manual on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Tascam-644-Midi...399425507QQcategoryZ41480QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

... very likely it's a copy, but if u want a legitimate copy from Tascam Parts, they're at (323)727-4840.

If I have a chance to come up to speed on the 644 and your detailed questions, I'll post again later. The 644 is more complicated than your average 4-tracker, but it's one of the best Portastudio's ever made.

Good luck.

I've got a 688. The manual is beyond necessary as everything is being routed everywhere on it and it's just chaos without it.

Thanks Reel Person. Unfortunately I'm in the UK(I should have pointed that out) so that ebay item and that number is no good for me, but thanks for looking out though.
Really, for the recordings I'm doing at the mo (drum tracking with very budget mics) any 4 track would do, but I really like the features on the 644, plus I think it actually looks quite cool! Reminds me of KnightRider for some reason. :p

yeah, you dont say! :)

Hey, so could you tell me how you save custom scenes on your 688 then? I'm sure it's the same for the 644. Nevermind about all the routing bizniz, I can bodge up settings that do what I want, but constantly changing the preset scenes does waste alot of time.

Cheers folks.

Nicely put.

Anyway the 644/688 is a nice piece of kit,... and I bet it even talks back to you once in a while!;)

When I got my 644, not only did it come with a manual, but it came with a handy audio cassette tutorial that walked you through assigning and setting/saving scenes. I just had an idea, that it would be a lot easier to copy an audio than a manual! However, the manual is quite handy, as it goes in depth on every subject and setting.

When I get it together, I'll go over the sequence of setting and saving scenes. It's really a matter of a few concise key strokes, but with a hundred buttons to choose from trial/error is a bit difficult.

Users may PM me on this board for further discussion.

YARR! Thar she blows! Pirate message on the starboard bow me hearties!

... wait, that is what PM stands for right??
