Hmmm....solid rock on all sides?

I think you're officially fucked.

Yup

Yes solid rock all the way around.

I was thinking about putting those really thick moving blankets all the way around to start. Hows that sound?

Yeah...try some moving blankets on the walls. You might also look into something like the Auralex Home Studio Pack, which you should be able to put up on the walls/ceiling in a non-permanent way. BTW, what is going on with the ceiling as far as material/height, and what are the overall dimensions of the room? You should start going over this site as well.

I'd also consider making a tube trap or 2 to deal with low-end muddiness.

How does it sound now? I saw one TV show where they were making recordings in a big cave - the sound engineer said it was great -- tons of diffusion.

I suspect that you've got a lot of echos and boomieness going on though - right?

You can do a lot cheaply with some big panels made out of rigid fiberglass panels covered with fabric (check out http://home.locall.aunz.com/~johnsay/HR/index1.htm -- especially the "rear wall" ones) , and some homemade bass traps (check out http://ic.net/~jtgale/diy2.htm ).

Good luck!

Dj,
That's a cool little room you got there- I wanna record some electric guitar in it! :-) and a lot cleaner looking than my cellar!

Some questions: What are you trying to accomplish with sound proofing? Do you wanna knock down the sound getting out to the rest of the building or are you looking to change/ tune the sound of the room itself. How high is the ceiling and what's at the other end of the room? What instruments do you record in there?

I'm curious, tell us what it sounds like in there... I'm guessing a decent live room without too much echo.

DJ - firstly I'd face the other way - so you are setup where your keyboard is and your speakers fire down the long length in the room. You could stack all those vinyls on the wall behind you ;) but you will need something to suck up the reverb you must have in there like some rockwool or sumthin.

cheers

To be totally honest there is no echo at all. I am basically looking just to deaden the sound a little from goin upstairs, plus to give me a little better sound in the room.

To Dan Merrill

well liked I replyed earliar i am looking to quiet down the sound from goin upstairs and give the room a little better sound.

Now that pic is old. Right now I have carpet on the floor. and where my turntables were, now my monitors and keyboard are there. Plus where you see the vinyl in those shitty plastic crates there is actually a shelf there for the vinyl. My turntables are where the keyboard use to be and so on.

Now the ceiling is only about 7 feet high if that. :)

On the other end of the room is just a little walk way to my washer and dryer with tons of storage junk.

Now what I record in there is basically just my turntABLES, samplers, drum machines AND KEYBOARD. Nothing more. I'm a producer and all I do is make beats for a ton of people down there.

The room has no echo and yes It would make a good live room :)
Thanks

DJ.

Some blankets will knock down the live sound, but probably won't help with the escaping sound much.. It's probably mostly the low end the passes upstairs and that may involve some serious soundproofing work to eliminate.

In terms of making your room sound better:

If you have even minimal carpentry skills, I would agree with Dolemite.. build some tube traps. These will work as broadband absorbers (highs and lows) and will tighten up the low end sound in your space ( more punch) as well as reduce the liveness of the room. They work best in corners, but can put them most anywhere and you could even pile some of those crates on top of them. Do a search of "cylindrical tube traps" or "bass traps" on this forum to find out about making them.

I don't think the tubes will help too much with sound transfer to the upstairs, but they will help your space sound way better.

Ok thanks Dan Merrill

Ok I will look into that. Thanks man

But I still need a way to stop some of the sound from going upstairs. Can anyone else help me out
