I got the FMR RNP pre (actually will get it tomorrow) Never owned a pre before besides what came onboard my mixers. I will be lugging it into a Tascam DAW. So... Do I need to set the gains on the DAW down and crank the preamp up, or do I set the gains on the DAW about midway...

I know this is probably a silly question I could answer myself once I get the unit- I am just trying to get a heads up. I am thinking the preamp needs to do most of the work to get the full "flavor" of the recording. But I have been wrong before... Any takers- please talk to me!

It's not a silly question at all.
I bought a Nady 8 channel preamp plus a Behringer 8 channel preamp and had a heck of a time figuring out how to set them up with my Korg D3200 & Echo Mona.
However, wait 'til the gear arrives and have a go at it yourself.
Then if you can't figure it out, some of the geniuses around here will.
I presume you have a reason for wanting to try something other than the Tascam for preamps?

Yeah, well I was using the Tascam US428 but just upgraded to the FW1080 or whatever its called. With my old mixer, I set the gains at about 12:00 on my DAW, and the mixer gains I fooled with it to taste. Somewhere around 12:00 is where they usually sat though. This is my first preamp, and I am really excited about it because of the reviews its received. A recording expert on this forum (and several others) stated this level of preamp would be better than any onboard pre I had, even on the Mackie boards, so I took his word for it and ran with it. We'll see when I hit the big red button right?

That's it, sorry. So many numbers its hard to keep up with anymore. I ordered it yesterday actually through MF (sweet deal I thought- got 10% off with their promo code). I'll let you know how it works- more channels than I need, so I think its perfect. I could not justify getting the step up for twice the money.

Alright: Got you now.
That Tascam looks like a great rig.

Meant nothing to me until I Googled it. (Really Nice Preamp)
There's a lot to be said for taking the time to write the full name of a piece of gear and throwing links in.
"Really Nice Preamp" is instantly recognizable.
I brought the Really Nice Compressor home about a year ago but took it back because there was no way to use it with the Echo Mona.
The mic guy at the local Tom Lee Music store at that time, really knows his gear and highly recommended the "Really Nice" stuff.
Let us know how it goes

.bet that it's really nice!!

you'll want to go into the DAW through a line level input (probably TRS cable) not a mic in (probably XLR cable) to avoid the boards own preamps, otherwise you're passing the preamped signal out from the RNP into the Pres on the Tascam and essentially losing the benefit of the outboard pre since if you go in through the mic inputs, you are still going through the Tascam pres.
If you go in at line level you should be able to leave the faders at Unity (zero) until it comes time to mix

Hmmm!
With both my Korg and Echo Mona, I can completely turn down the preamps and use the outboard gear.

Be careful to check out the actual circuitry of the mixer input.. A number of manufacturers just attenuate the line input port before combining into the preamp stage...
