Help Me Out

YouTube - Rolling In The Deep -- Rock Cover DUET Official Adele Acoustic Electric Piano

I was wondering if there is anyone has any suggestions on this mix. I'd like the vocals to have more cut and clarity, but anytime that I EQ them they always sound harsh and messed with... definitely not natural. Just looking for something to take my mixes up a level in terms of quality.

Mics Used: AT2020(vocals), SM57(guitar)
Pre: Focusrite Saffire 6 built in
DAW: Sony Acid Music Studio

I've only made a few recordings and have very little idea of what I'm doing, but if EQ'ing the vocals isn't working, maybe try EQ'ing the piano part to um... "get it out of the way", if that makes any sense? I haven't the slightest idea what to cut to make that happen, but I use the EQ that came with Reaper and use the "move to back" preset.

Note: I just looked at the EQ settings in Reaper and the "move to back" preset appears to have a high pass filter at 150Hz, a -6db cut at 315Hz, -3db cut at 2500Hz, and a low pass filter at around 8000Hz. I think I'm describing it right. It seems to make a track sound thin when soloed, but in the mix it has worked for me. Keep in mind though, my mixes suck. :laughings:

Hopefully someone who knows what they're doing will chime in. :o

Oh yeah, good performance. And yes, that Orange amp sounds nice. ;)

Thank you very much for the information. The piano had a low pass filter on it already, but I will try the high pass and cuts later tonight. I really want the vocals to stand out, but at the same time have the music surround them. I want them to fall into place, rather than just "sit on top of the mix" as I feel they do slightly.

Thanks again! And yes, that Orange amp he has is pretty fantastic. It sounds much better in the uncompressed version as well. I did nothing to it at all -- It's the raw signal coming through the SM57. Any time I messed with it, I just felt as if I was doing more harm than good.

To me they sound fine in the verses, but the 2nd vocalist gets a bit separated in the chorus. When you EQ the vox, cut instead of boosting and you could try following it with a fast release compressor, with a fairly deep threshold and reasonably aggressive make up gain. That can help to both smooth them out and bring them to the front
