hey, i'm trying to figure out what type of amp i need to use a mic... I want to buy the Shure58 probably, but i don't know if you need a special type of amp for mics or if you can just use any guitar amp or something like that.. i'm kinda clueless when it comes to mics so explain things to me like i'm 3 years old.. :P ( my main purpose for the mic+amp right now would just be using it for vocals to practise with my band.. and possibly record stuff)
Please help! thanx.. - Jon

are you a singer looking for an amp and a mic to practice with your band?

if these is right, well, get the shure sm58, it is a leyend in vocals IN THE STAGE!
if you want it for recording get the one "everybody" likes here, EVENT RODE NT1, or the nice competition, AUDIO TECHNICA AT3525...

=========BUT FIRST... ===============
---- you will have to do a research to understand the different kinds of mics, cardios and hypercardios and dynamics and condensors; these ones are the most importants to understand. ----

extra tip: I think hypers are better in the stage or pactice because the lickage.

make a search here (homerecording.com) about Mics.

check this out too, these is an extensive educational place of evrything, search for everything about vocals:

about the amp... thats another history.

aaah.. man, you never answered my main question... :)
do i actually need a new amp to use my mic? or can i just use any old amplifier for now?.. i'm only 16 years old, which means my band isn't a big serious thing, which also means that i'm not expecting this big amazing sound... i just need something to amplify my voice..

GET THE BIGGGGGGEEEER AMP YOU CAN GETTTT!!!!! :D

THERES A ROGUE P.A. package that includes two bigs speakers and a powered mixer with 6 channels!!!

thats gonna be very cool for you and you band!!!! $$279...!!!

How's it goin' MB40 -
You can run your 58 thru about any kind of amp, but a PA is the prefered way to go. You may want to also consider impedence issues. The 58 is a low imp mike, if you run into a 1/4 input you will need a transformer.
Most PA's around have both lo and hi inputs so you would be OK there.
As far as new goes I have always been fond of Crate gear, give them a look see if you can. Also check out the pawnshops for old Shure vocalmasters, peaveys etc.

Get yourself a mic cable (XLR-XLR, don't get those XLR to 1/4" cables) and an impedance adapter, which will convert XLR to 1/4" and wail away through your old guitar amp. While you do that, save money, go to stores, ask around, do your homework. By the time you have money, hopefully you'll know exactly what you need. Don't buy anything (like Rogue deals, etc.) just because someone told ya. You have to know what you need, that's when you get the best deals and best gear.

Well, finally the advice starts rolling in. And if you want to record what you're doing, you're going to have to get either a preamp or a mixer for your Shure microphone. Preamp's cheap, mixer's not. ($100 for one channel vs $350 for a few channels, if you have the mics to put through them :)) Not to mention something to record on (4-track? computer? something else?). Well, this *is* home recording.com. You planning to record the whole band with one Shure SM-58?

thats right... DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND RESEARCH,
don't waste your money.

I told you about the roge because it is cheap and it may help your band, but, and you will hear this a lot, you get for what you paid.

cheers. :D

LOL

thats cruel man.

Stranger things have happened...

I remember the days when the singer and guitar went thru the same amp. We didn't know any better.
You gotta work with what you've got. And if you have to -don't be afraid to tell the rest of the guys in the band "hey - turn down - I can't hear the vocals."

Rarely works - but is always worth a try.
