Travis,
Have your Oktava's been modified?
I think I might mod mine and then they might get more use.

no, mine are supposed to be stock. to tell you the truth, i have'nt opened them up to see though. they have some tiny little jewelers screws holding them together and i don't have a screw driver small enough to take the screws out. i plan on modding the 603 first to see how i like it and then maybe do the mk012's.

i've got some free time right now so i'm going to go ahead and do a comparison clip of the mk012, 603, and jm27. it might help someone out. it should'nt take me more than an hour.

i was wrong, it's gonna take longer than an hour........train, cars, ac, etc. gotta wait in between the noise. i'm working on it right now though.

Just thought that I'd wrap this thread up by saying that it seemed in the end that the 27's were the best bet for my money. They arrived this morning and they sound perfect. :)
Many thanks to Amra and to Travis for their clips which gave me a good idea of what to expect.

I'd say it's widely agreed that the mc012 is a fine mic, very rich, clear and detailed. It's also widely known that there are many units out there that have a poor sound quality due to inconsistent quality control and counterfeit production. So one may sound great and another crappy.

... that's basically what I've heard about Oktava mics. And it's is a problem that you don't have to worry about with the Rode NT-5's. In my experience, Rode's attention to QC is superlative.

Good choice.
