Hrm.. Maybe an RE20 for rap?

BTW, I'm sure you can find a low hr XT20 for around $300.

So $400 is your total cost for everything? This I think would be a good starting system, portable too:

The only thing that would be missing would be some editing software for your computer (presuming you have a computer with a CD burner already) and you can go with ntrack for a good deal on that.

Sure you would eventually want to add a LD condenser microphone, studio monitors, accoustic treatment your space and so on, but the majority of the cost of this system is the Fostex, and that will serve you well long into the future.

Well . . . you might need to expand that $400 ceiling of yours just a tad.

If you want close to studio quality, that is. If you don't mind something a little closer to demo quality, then I'm sure you can get by with that.

Maybe get yourself an SM58 and some sort of 4-track portastudio / recorder.

Go to ebay and buy a used Roland VS880 recorder, a Shure SM57 mic and some headphones... and start recording.

Do you have a computer? If so:

Cakewalk Home Studio software ($90)
M-Audio Audiopile soundcard ($150)
Studio Projects VTB-1 preamp ($130)
Shure SM 57 microphone ($80)
Total = $450

If no computer:
Fostex MR8 digital recorder ($300)
Shure SM 57 microphone ($90)
Total = $390
