Check for a burr. Like a little sharp point underneath where the string sits. You can take a file and file it smooth.

Yeah, what he said. :)

I've been using floyd's for 25 years, and I've never had one break on the nut  .....they always seem to break on the bridge/saddles.

One note of interest: I used to break strings on a weekly basis, and ever since I switched to Dean Markley "Blue Steels" I hardly ever break a string. I'm not really sure if I believe all of the hype about string tone longevity through the cryogenics, but I do know that I don't break strings anymore. :)

You could also be torquing down the string lock on the bridge too tight. Alot of people really put the Hulk Hogans on those things but you don't need to. It pinches the string alot harder on the corner where it bends to enter the saddle. It just needs to be tight enough to hold it in. I broke alot more strings early on from doing just that!

EDIT!!!

oh shit, I just realized that you said you were breaking them at the nut! I was thinking of the bridge - sorry. In that case I would probably just be worried about a burr as was already stated.
:o I realize now that I had absolutely nothing to add to this post...sorry I am an idiot!!! :D HAHAHA

Well, don't feel bad. He may be locking it down too tight at the nut.

He probably is locking the nut too tight, most people do. It really just needs to be hand tightened, don't use the allen key. Thats all I have to add.
