Help! I'm stuck in Zip Disk hell!

Hi there. I'm a newbie with a problem. I recorded 11 songs with a guy on his old BOSS home recorder on 11 separate zip disks, and I'd like to get 'em onto CD, but he has no computer or program that we can download the mixes onto for transfer. I'd just say screw it and re-record the songs elsewhere, but they came out really good. Any suggestions? P.S.--Now I know why this is obsolete technology. Dave the Maze

the first question is: Do you guys, still have the old BOSS home recorder? ;) or do you mean, you just are staring at 11 Zip-discs with no device around to stick'em into? :)

What's on the disks? Will they read as FAT in a regular ZIP drive so you can copy the project off as files?

If not, you might have to do something perverse like ripping the raw sectors off the disk and importing them into GoldWave (guessing the sample rate and data format). You'll probably need Linux too, as Windows is pretty useles when it comes to direct disk access and data recovery of that kind.

If you can copy the files off but they aren't WAV format, you can again load them into Goldwave (specifiying various formats and rates until it works).
 
You could learn a lot about the format from the manual for the original Boss recorder, which you will probably find at the following link:

Roland has a pretty extensive on-line manual database.
 
You're going to need the Boss recorder....roland uses proprietary files...so even if you copy them onto a PC...it's not like they are going to be wav files or anything.

Another thing to look into is the BR8 converter program.

Hey! We ain't no stupid here. :) I've been using zips since early days of Windows-95 ... so never miss my fresh Lettice & Tomato. I've zipped my first sandwich about the same day I've learned how-to-drag-and-drop with one right hand while holding my Classic BLT in the left hand. :D
NO MORE STALE Sandwiches! Zip'n'Yam!

now, where's Dave the Maze? I guess, - having a sandwich or somethin' :p
