Me and my freinds are about to set up a studio, but in the mean time we've been working on this digital recorder, called the boss br-532 that my freind's cousin owns. we record the beats into it, and that goes cool, but after were done with the vocals it always sounds like shit. the vocals sound either to low or way to high i can't get our vocals to sit in the mix. I know this is art and takes time, but i'm doing all i can and and i don't know what else to do. can you guys help me out, give me some compression levels, eq levels ect.
oh yeah, i'm pretty sure you cant add effects after the stuff is recorded on this thing wich sucks, but if you can let me know.

Compress the vocals.

any level suggestions, i tried compression and it makes it sound to high in the mix. when i lowered the level i sounded to low

If you are still getting fluctuations that make it difficult to fit it in the mix you can either:

1.) increase the compression ratio to squish it more

2.) create a 'hole' in the instrumental tracks using eq to allow the vocals to sit in... as a simple example cut 1000hz by 2db and raise the vocals by 2db at 1000hz

Thanx for the information, but if your talking about doing those steps after its recorded, for some reason you can't use insert effects after somethings recorded. I found that i can trasfer my tracks to computer since the mixer runs on smartmedia, and my family pc has a card reader, with that said would you know of any free software i could use with it to edit it. thank you

Man... you need to get off that current system!

I know, I hate what were working with now, but until we get all our money straight, and finalize our equipment list that's all we have.

nothing wrong with it everyone has to start from somewhere I started on the br-8 and then someone gave me a 532 and know i use tascam 428 at home. I strongly suggest the Tascam 428 if u like doing your editing on pc which we all do.

what music do you record. I record rap, and if you got good results with the br-532, please give me some tips.

Maybe not an actual answer to your question, but I'm still gonna say it ;)
"high" and "low" are terms used to indicate something that has to do with frequency range, never with volume. If you mention low vocals I'm thinking Isac Hays or Ja Rule ;)

Not to be too critical, but do you think it's smart to start a recording studio if you don't even know the lingo? (and this is really a very basic thing)

It just sounds to me like maybe you're reaching the limitations of your system . . . as well as the limits of your abilities to work with it.

My guess is that it's either time to expand your setup, time to track in a real studio . . . or just time to keep experimenting and practicing with what you have. Right now, it is what it is. Best of luck.
