This is completely wrong. A preamp just boosts a signal.

Don't get hung up on semantics. For a noob, that is exactly what is does. it "converts" (note the quotes) from mic level to line level. I don't think we need to write a 5 page explanation on mic level versus line level , balanced versus unbalanced, and high impedance versus low impedance. For all practice purposes, the preamp makes the mic output usable by the line inputs of his sound card.

Or for simplicty sake, take the advice above and get a USB mic. No worries about preamps or sound cards with that solution. Not as flexible as separate components, but it sure is easy.:)

go to amazon.com and buy the book pc recording studios for dummies. Also check out the website http://www.tweakheadz.com/ and read all the articles on recording. Be informed before buying anything.

BUT you're only changing the signal level, not the audio information going from the mic to the computer. To use the word convert means you're changing the audio itself. It's like how you give a car gas to run. The gas gives it the fuel it needs to go from A to B. Gas doesn't convert the car from A to B ;-).

What is MIDI?
Gods Unholy gift to industrial music... lol actually the link above for sweetwater is a better answer. But midi can appear to be alot of things. Its a very versitial tool. I use midi for everythiung, when I hit a trash can, Im triggering midi, when ambient sequences run in the background, im using midi. basically everything associated with what I do (with the exception of bass and guitar, no roland GR-20 yet :D ) is midi... but look here for ALOT of info on midi http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&defl=en&q=define:MIDI&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title

hey

download audacity software. its free, and it does everything u want to do and more. google search it and download it, i highly recommend it

Look into N-Track (http://www.fasoft.com) It's cheap (~$60) and is pretty powerful.

Ditto on the recommendation to buy a book or two on the subject. Get the basics down, and then come back if you need help with some specific product recommendations.
