I have been thinking about getting a outboard comp/limiter for my mastering, also an outboard channel strip. I was wondering how to hook this all up to my current set up. How to route all of it together so that I could use these extra little goodies. I am running win7 64bit sonar 8, I have a tascam us800 for now as my interface. Any suggestions on how to get it all to work?

Any outboard compressor worth using for mastering will probably cost more than all your other gear combined, and then your US800 won't really do it justice. If I were you I would stick to plugins.

well, i was thinking about getting an art vla II tube comp. for like 300 bucks, with a preamp, that interface is going bye bye soon and I'm either gonna go with focusrite or motu. I am just trying to get the best possible recordings I can you know. I did alittle research, and it appears that it is basically source into a preamp to compressor to interface. Not exactly what I thought at first, so I probably will go with a preamp but stick with the vst plugs for comp and such.

Tracking is a different thing than mastering. That ART VLA II could be handy. Just know that it's easy to make a mistake with a hardware compressor that can't be undone.

To make improvements you need to find the weakest link in the chain. Most likely that will be at the front of the process, the source itself and mic choice/placement. Get it right at that level and the rest comes easy. I would rather have a big selection of mics than any expensive hardware processors.

With lower-priced gear, yes you're better off just using plugins and doing it in the computer....
