Hello! I'm so new, I don't even know how to use this board! Oh man, I've been messing with Focusrite products for a month and they're driving me crazy!

I'll spare you the details and just start at the end. Right now, I have a FOCUSRITE 2i2, an Ipad 3rd Generation that I just wiped over a thousand photos and videos off of, so I could use it for recording...but when I plugged the 2i2 into the usb (using a camera kit) it says it uses too much power. (grrrrr) OK, that seems to be the issue I'm running into with the Ipad. The Focusrite 2i2 doesn't have a power jack.

I also have a newish Dell LapTop that I just reset to factory default with Windows, so it's like brand new. I went to Focusrite.com, downloaded the stuff that went with 2i2, it says it's complete and ready to use, but then it doesn't work. Only a little audio driver box pops up in the left top corner of the computer screen when I open it.

I'm about ready to give up on Focusrite. I need to get some home recording done of original work. My creative juices are flowing down the drain! Can anyone help me get this set up? I feel so dumb!
:wtf:

Morning Curleehorn and welcome.

Peeps here know that I do not rate the 2i2 highly but it IS a basically sound interface and should certainly work with the Dell (I know nothing of "iCrap but see * later) .

You do not say which recording software you are using (called a DAW) but I shall suggest you download (from ninite.com) the free app' Audacity. Not so useful long term, but everyone here knows it.

But! Before all that and because you say you have the laptop at "factory gate" status I would remove all the Focusrite software you have on it at present and then set a Restore Point (label it "before I ****d about or similar) this then gives you a quick and easy way to get back to square one.

Now install Audacity. Then the 2i2 drivers....To the Absolute Book! Almost all USB audio kit wants at least part of the software installed BEFORE you connect the hard ware. This can be vital.

Once you are sure the 2i2 is installed open Audacity and on the top find "Edit" then "Preferences" then find the 2i2 in the list and set it up as a playback and record device.

Then tell us wa'appen!

*Later you might want to investigate Reaper. I am also assuming Windows 7?

Dave.

Good advice there. ^^^

Not THAT good James coz I put in the wrong footnote!
Meant to say re iJunk...I did a quick Google for a USB "thru power" box, i.e. "B" in "A" out and a power socket to "float" 5V on the power lines. Quick look has so far not found such. Plenty of hubs of course but very rarely do AIs work thru them.

Sounds like more of a user error than hardware error. I wouldn't recommend reinstall, I recommend learn how to use it.

Box showing up probably means it is working. First, need to know what software you are using for recording. The interface should be plugged into the laptop directly. For several reasons, USB hubs tend to slow the data down and will cause latency in the future. Plus, looks like your hub doesn't do a power boost. In the long run, your better off finding a dedicated USB port on your laptop.

Once you tell us the software, it is just a matter of selecting it. If is it software that supports ASIO, that is what you want to use for recording. Read the instructions of the software on how to configure your software for the interface. It is not that difficult, but chances are you will need to read how to do it.

On the IPad, I don't even know why you would even bother recording on that, so can't help on that area. But I would assume, you are going to get some performance issues if you decide to go that way.

Lately, I've been using Focusrite Scarlett 18i8, and it works great with Windows 8.1.

Hi there, whilst connecting the iPad to your 2i2 is not an officially supported use for the 2i2, we know of many instances where this has worked. You could use a camera connection kit to connect a powered USB hub's output to the iPad and connect the unit to the USB hub's input.

With regard to your issues on your laptop, what does the pop-up box say? You may want to follow the earlier poster's advice on reinstalling everything; it certainly won't do any harm!

Cheers,

Dan

I have to use a powered USB Hub to get the 2i2 to connect with my iPad mini...

Tried it in order to make better quality beat-making videos... Unfortunately, my laptop didn't like being separated from the 2i2. So I got (Xmas gift from the wife) a little Behringer UCA222 for the iPad and run audio into that from the headphone out on the 2i2 using a stereo-jack-to-phono cable.

As far as 2i2 with your laptop goes.... Unplug the 2i2, reinstall the drivers (check they're the Scarlett ones and the most recent) re-connect the 2i2 and go to audio options in your DAW and make sure that it can see the interface.

How does the UCA 222 power? I did not think the iPad would power USB devices?

Dave.

UCA has no phantom power... It's phono in, phono out, mini-jack (headphone) out, optical out...

Lightning to usb.

iPad mini can run my M-Audio 'Producer' mic without the hub too now that I think on...
