I know I'm a moron for asking this, but...

I have an AT4033 mic, a M Audio DMP3 pre-amp, a RNC1773 compressor, and a Korg D-16 recorder...

How do I hook all this stuff up? Is the order as I described it above?? Also, I don't know whether to use TRS or TS plugs to do this. I want to use only one track on the D16, so I guess I would use the L (Mono) side only?

I'm confused!!!

You have two choices:

Mic->DMP3->RNC->Recorder
If you have a singer that is loud and soft throughout the song then this option might be best. Point all your knobs to top center and hit the Super nice button on the RNC. It is a wonderful thing to hear. If you are screaming metal music you can get more radical on the settings.

Mic->DMP3->Recorder (Use the RNC at mixdown)
If you have a singer that knows how to sing in a mic then option 2 might be best with the vocalist backed off starting around 8 inches and you will get a nice open sound with less lows. If there are any peaking spots you can put the RNC on the vocal trak at mixdown.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! One other question...

Thanks Middleman!

I think I'm going to go with the Mic->DMP3->RNC->Recorder setup. One point I'm confused on though - what kind of cables should I be using with this set up? Since the DMP3 is balanced, I think I need to unbalance it (according to the RNC manual) by using a TS 1/4" plug. Since I want to use only one track on the Recorder should I just go in and out on the Left (Mono) side of the RNC? And what cable leaving the RNC to the Recorder would acheive the best sound? I've heard that one should use a TS 1/4" to an XLR for minimizing noise? Would you recommend this?

Thanks for the help!!!

Do this. (Components are normal text, cables are in parentheses.)

AT4033 (XLR to XLR mic cable) DMP3 (Quarter to Quarter TS) RNC Left Channel (Quarter to Quarter TS) Line-in on your recorder

Just use a standard 1/4 plug cable under 3-6 ft and balanced vs non balanced is not an issue (The shorter the better). Longer than this you would want to go balanced.

Yes, you can go down one side of both units for vocals. Make sure you record a single mono track in the recorder, stereo tracks tend to phase when you make clones of the tracks to fatten the vocal.
