I just recorded my friends band, and I am just being way to hard on myself I think. I know it's nothing special, but I know it's not terrible. It's not mastered, just mixed. If anyone has any input just let me know. I'm using Cubase SE, and i've only had it for a few months, haven't really ventured in to it that much, so if you want explain to me something please do it in retard / newbie terms, haha. Also, should I bother getting it mastered? I have no idea how much better it will make it sound, if at all. So, please help me out. =)

Take care,
Adam.

whoa its kind of rare to click a song in here and hear something other than 80s hair metal. its a good song, your mix could use a bit of work. the snare needs a lot more high end in it. i'm not sure if its just a dull snare or if its crummy preamps, but i'd adjust that first. give it some slight reverb maybe. double tracking guitars helps SO much in music like this. record one normal and then take out all the gain (leave a bit for heavier parts) and boost the mids and do a 2nd take. the drums or at least the cymbals could use a bit of reverb even to make them a bit livelier. other than that it was a good song and i wanna hear more as you progress with mixing it!

oh and those guitars sounds out of tune? at least the one in the right channel :(

Thanks man, I appreciate all the info. The snare isn't dull, i'll just add more high end. I used a Firepod so the mic pre's aren't that crummy haha. As for double tracking the guitars, there's only one guitarist, so I don't know. He didn't really want to double track, I could try to get him to do it though, we'll see what happens. Do you think I should bother getting it mastered or what? I mean, I don't have monitors because I spent all my money on the Firepod / Mics, so now i'm saving up for those. I'm mixing through Sony MDR-V600 Studio Monitor headphones, I know headphones suck for mixing and what not, but they're all I have haha. =) Once again thanks for the input. =) Oh, and I don't think the guitars are out of tune, I tuned the guitars myself.. But then again his guitar goes out of tune sometimes, on random haha.

Take care,
Adam.

ahh mixing through headphones, gotcha. maybe you should at least keep a few pairs of headphones around (i know its hard when you have no money) and constantly rotate them and find out what each one's weaknesses are. i only have 2 pairs and neither of them are accurate but i can usually tell how they're going to translate. then again i have monitors now, but i had to mix on stereo speakers for years!

oh and i used to think double tracking was stupid and would end up sounding horrible and out of time, but i sucked it up one day and just did it on an old mix and i'll be damned if it didn't help that dull guitar come to life.

Tell the guitarist that it will be the exact same part with different settings, to sound better. He might not like the idea of double tracking because he thinks he won't be able to replicate it live.

I'd bring the snare forward a little bit, and then add some high end.
