I got a new (don't laugh) squire bronco. The one I played at the store was fine, the student size fit my hand, and it didn't hum. I got one at musicians friend was $50 cheaper but when I got it, it hummed even at low volumes. I went to guitarnuts and followed the plan for sheilding a strat (adapted for my bass) but there was absolutly no difference. Do I need a new pick-up or what?

Hum....

It might be your pickups, cable, the jack, the amp, did you try the same cable and amp with a different guitar? Im not sure what it could be....

bronco bass, those are fun to play, kinda smaller than my p-bass, but that makes my fingers fast, have fun

Different cables, differtent amps, different guitar in bass amp(no hum)...
It's definitely the bass

the smaller size is what I like, I got short stubby fingers

So its the guitar? hum...i thought it could be the strings or the amp or stuff, but i guess im wrong, i mean my friends epy humms alot, but its just the guitar so i guess it is.

i like my p-bass, nice and big, feels like something in your hands, and i have pretty long fingers and big hands so i can handle it. i dont like the little ones too much, hard for me to hit the right frets.
but i can move fast on 'em

check to see that the ground wire running to the bridge is actually making a good connection and is soldered properly to the ground loop on the pots. You might even scrape the end of the wire under the bridge and scrape the bottom of the bridge to insure proper grounding. I replaced the pickups in a '77 Ibanez Geddy Lee jazz copy i have with OBL`s and had a grounding problem. It was only after desoldering and resoldering the grounds on the pots that it went away.

Did all that, I made a common ground point to eliminate ground loops(as suggested at guitarnut), checked continuity, even the foil lining--all good

I know my soldering is good--20 years exp, NASA trained...

does squire just use cheap single coil pick-ups ?
if so...any recommendations?

I was was about to make a post about the same problem. I have my friends Ibanez bass at my house which I am trying to use to record. I don't know that much about guitars. When I turn up any higher frequencies on the bass there is a loud hum. The bass sounds muffled without these frequencies though. Any suggestions? I'm a drummer so I need more explaining about the bass parts. Thanks

my friend brought his fender bass over and we found the same problem! He said his bass never had a hum before. We even tried changing cables a few times. It's running through the DMP3 preamp. The humming goes away when we turn down the higher end just like the other bass. Any ideas?
