Hey, we have been trying to do a "home" recording for while now, we have everything sounding great except for the Bass drum, it seems a little muffled. could it be because of mic placement or what?

i love these posts.

What mic are you using?

How do you have the mic positioned?

have you tried boosting the eq at 3k and 8k?

Id like pictures if you have em.

or a sound clip would be cool.

I love slayer.

Alright, this is simple...

I assume that you at least have some type of mixer and some decent mics to work with.

If you have 2 mics to work with:

1) Take the mic with the higher freq response (some sort of vocal or instrument mic) and place it on the BEATER side, about 3 inches away from the head and 3 inches next to the drum pedal.

Tilt the mic so it points straight to the point where the beater hits the drum head. That should take care of your "high end" side.

2) Next take your other mic (something with good low response) and place it on the other side of the drum head. It helps if you remove the drum head. This helps relieve some of that flat packing sound and also helps open up the sound a little more.

3) In addition to all that, it would help to have an ambient mic to pick up some of the overall effect of the drum.

I usually cut the lower end freqs off the first mic and boost the lower freqs on the second. After that it's just a matter of balancing both until you have a sound you like.

You could try using a wooden or rubber beater on the kick pedal also. Tuning the kick's batter head lower will result in more click (not boom since the boom becomes sub sonic then). Boosting frequencies at 2k and 10k, and scooping your mids. Roll-off everything below 40 since it's just mush anyway. Add an exciter to the kick. Use a 57 to mic it, or something not as traditional as a regular kick mic. Practice a lot?

Ok! first what mic's are you using? Where have you got it/them placed? have you tried placing the mic inside the bass? either by removing the head or cutting a decent sized hole in the skin!

experiment is the best way of finding the sound you what so you know what 2do!
