I am not exactly sure what move I should be making next in my homerecording development. I recently graduated from college, but during college my old roommate let me use a Roland VS880 which I produced 4 albums for different people. I had to give it back and now I am stuck with some random equipment and no way to record. I own an AKG BULS (i think that's right) and a Rode NTK, the NTK has a tube preamp with is, and I have no preamp for the AKG. I also have a RNC.
I currently own a laptop which is Pentium 4, 640RAM (which i can upgrade to 1gig RAM) and a 2.0 processor. I also use this laptop for grad school and my job so there are many programs I can't just drop to boost performance. I have USB connections on the laptop, but no firewire. (as far as I know of)I have experiencing mixing by hand and printing effects, but from what I understand computer recording is easier then hard disk.
I guess I am just looking for some advice. I don't need top of the line recording software or anything like that, but I want something that is going to be clear, clean, and tasteful. Any suggestions as to a cheap software that a 2.0 processor can handle with 1 gig of RAM, price range under 200$. Also what should I consider for a interface. I would need something with preamps built in for the AKG. *again something udner 200$
Ideally, I would like to be able to start recoding again for under 500$ (interface/preamp and software). I am really just lost as to what I should consider. I don't have the money currently, but if I my laptop can't handle something decent, I would try to save up to probably purchase a roland V-station. Again, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Much apologies if this information can be found elsewhere, I am newb and have no problem admitting this. Thanks again...
