HELLO! i bought my first acoustic in 27 years, and have a new mp3 with it...

I'd say you figured it out. I wish I could figure mine out like that. I don't have much to say other than this is an excellent tune and I really enjoyed it. I assume it was recorded on the vs880ex. What preamp do you use?

HEY JIMH.......

Thanks for checking it out.... as far as preamps go, all i have is an art mp....... i use it for the phantom power on the at4033......
then i run through a little cheapy dbx, and straight into the vs880ex.......... a little internal reverb on the melody parts, and then master it straight to cd.....

Beautiful... it glows! Not much I can offer as far as improving it, it's damn near perfect.

That axe records very nicely. The sound you got is very full and spacious. I am encouraged -- I have an ART Tube MP too which I have yet to try with my pedestrian Yamaha acoustic and my RODE NT-1...

I thought this was great, I just love the sound of that acoustic, it feels like I'm in a cloud and there is a unicorn staring at me.

This song would be good for a theme for some Home & Garden TV Show.

Very cool

That really is kick ass. I'm just starting to get into home recording and haven't been able to get my acoustic to sound anywhere near that good. I use the same AT MIC as you, but don't have a preamp, I use the phantom power builtin to my Digi 001. Anyway, I just need to keep messing with it to see what works.

How did you have this mic'd if you don't mind me asking....

Anyway,
Great Song!
<-peace->

I'm not even going to try and fault anything, sounded pretty much perfect to me, and the song was really nice. I just got a sm58beta and jimmeek preamp/compressor yesterday and so far my attempts at micing acoustic guitar sound a bit like there's a dead horse between the mic and guitar, but I guess I'll learn. Good stuff!

Noted in my log:

"GONZO - a real guitar player with taste and a penchant for melodic nuances which transcend mere notes on a page."

Exquisite.

WOW! SOME RESPONSES, GREAT!

Thanks so much for listening. With this being my first recording with this brand new guitar (and also being within the 30 days of my return-policy.......) i was curious to see how it came across.

i was seriously considering taking it back, but honestly, i've been still auditioning other guitars, and haven't found anything else that i like better, except for the ones that are at least a thousand dollars more....!

alchuck-
good luck with your tube mp, i'm sure you'll find the sweet spot with it, just do a lot of experimenting.... then post it!

whyte ice-
glad you like the tune, you totally crack me up with the garden show thing....... i wished i knew who to contact!!! LOL

endless coda-
thanks for the complment.... the mic position was basically at soundhole level, i was sitting with the mic on the end of a boom right in front of me, and i just kept twisting left to right til i heard a nice tone coming through the headphones......not very scientific, i know........ i guess it was a little off axis, coming from the tail end of the guitar towards the neck a bit.....

jags-
dead horse, huh? might i suggest, well, i don't know what to suggest!!! LOL..........
i got very close to the mic, in fact, on the outro part, with the little lead playing at the end, you can here the end of my pick making noise on the fretboard, so maybe you should try putting the mic as close as you can get it, and really play around with the compressor settings.. in fact, try to set the 58 up without the compressor first, then go back and add the compressor in so it sounds transparent............

psmith66-
that's very kind of you. it is a little different than my other stuff..... HA! that'd be "has a penchant for noise......"

LOL

thanks again for all comments.

Damn

Greetings,

Damn thats good man....I gotta stop worrying about sound cards and go practice....

I actually like a bit of finger noise on acoustic tracks...sound live

I can only say 1 thing

I must now run myself through with my guitar, set it aflame, and save the world from anymore of my 6-string atrocities and torture !
Gonzo, that is absolutely gorgeous. Aside from good engineering, what talent, what sound, what beautiful thought provoking music ! I am in rapture, awe, and envy. Everything I attempt to do on a guitar is just noise compared to that. Bravo, excuse me, I have to go listen to it again.
Great Work, Silver

DANG!

it is really fine sounding. truth to tell, I would not have believed that the vs880 was capable of such quality if I had not heard your various works.

I really like the tone you got. Just the right amount of low end, midrange, highend. Just the right amount of everything.

peace

You guys have really inspired me to do more of this stuff!!

SirRiff-
yeah, the fingernoise isssue is always a toss-up... on one hand, you could do stuff to make it less noticeable, but at the same time, i like to try to capture a raw performance, because to my ears, it always seems more important to get the vibe, than a studio perfect sound..... but i love it when i hear pros get that studio-perfect sound...... HA....... what to do, what to do.... LOL

langleyt-
glad you listened. is "pretty" a bad thing? i wonder...... my hard rock buddies might give me shit.......LOL

silverhammer-
you're way too kind, dude..... and do not do yourself in.....bad karma.......!!

cyanjaguar-
yeah, the vs880ex is a nice tool, and if you can give up the channels (in master mode, you've only got 6 channels to use.... sucky!) you get the better uncompressed sound...... this recording was basically 2 rhythm tracks, and 2 melody tracks, then mastered straight to a final pair, so no bouncing... much cleaner...
that balance of sound was, i think, simply an accident! i'll have to try to remember just how i sat, where the mic was, how i held my lip, etc, ad nauseum..........

thanks again for the listens!

No, no pretty is a good thing! Hard Rock can be pretty sometimes too. Your song was wonderful!

Holding back buddies....do not harm Gonzo! :)

Well, after reading all those raves...

....I just had to listen to this. It really does sound great.

Are those four separate acoustic guitar parts? If so, how did you conceive of/record it? First a bass line, then rhythm, then the lead? Or something else.

You have a great left hand. On your right hand, did you use a pick?

How did you position the at4033, and at what distance?

Real nice!

gonzo-

very nice piece. I enjoyed it quite a bit. The Taylor acoustic is the one guitar I have yet to buy that I want. It WILL be my next purchase.

H2H

WOW, ranks a rot for listening.....

i really appreciate the comments..... i had no idea when i did this that it would be worth a shit......

li slim-
yes, 4 seperate parts.......
the first take was the main rhythm part..... it's done fingerstyle, and i selectively pluck the strings i want, mostly thumb/1st/3rd/4th, that kind of thing, but i do alternate which strings i pluck, depending on where the melody line is going..... sometimes the chords back it up, sometimes a tonic note's gotta be in there...

then i went back and did a 2nd rhythm part, to mimic the first rhythm, only, i changed the pluck style to regular fingerstyle, and alternated plucked/arpeggiated stuff, and did a little fingernail brushing near the bridge, for the tinkly parts.....
then i did the main melody line, with a pick... you can hear the pick banging the neck on some of the lead part.....
then i did a harmony to the melody.....

the positioning of the mic....... if you're sitting, holding the guitar, the mic was on a boom, facing the soundhole from about 18" away....... so basically, i was kinda leaning into the mic, getting as close as i could and not bumping it....

hard2hear-
i really searched a long time to find a guitar i could (1st) afford, (2nd) i could play and had a certain sound. all the ones i like the best were at least a thousand dollars away from reality.
glad you liked and listened.......

Hell yeah...what everybody else said..and then some. That guitar's tone was great to say the least! Also that was some mighty fine playin mister. Enjoyed it...
