Hello all, I could use some advice...

First off I'd like to say hi. My name's Jeff and I've been playing guitar for 23 yrs, teaching for 10 yrs and recording for a whopping 5 yrs. lol Anyway I'm stumped...I just changed over to XP from ME and I'm trying to record through my line in with a stereo jack, as opposed to using my mic input which seems overly sensitive.

My problem is that no matter what I try, I'm coming out of the left channel only. My mic input now records nothing, btw, although the mic still works when plugged in. My soundcard is a lowly Creative soundblaster PCI 128D. Is my driver pooched? Any and all suggestions would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The line input is a stereo input opposed to the mic input which is mono.
When you plug a mono jack plug in a stereo connector, what you get is that the signal goes to the left channel and the right channel gets shorted out.

You can work around this. How depends on the recording software you're using. Usually you can select to record a mono signal and use either the left or the right channel of the stereo pair for that.

Ya I got mono enabled and it works fine in the single track view. I still haven't figured out how to enable mono in the multi-view though. BTW, I'm using Adobe Audition.

Mono...I get the mono/stereo prompt in the single track view but not in multi. It is defaulting to stereo recording on each track there and I end up coming out of only the left channel. I need mono recording in multi....mebbe it's because I'm plugged into the line in and not the mic input? I may need to switch back to the mic input....

haze. are you using an on board sound card in your pc.
if so - not good. its a waste using cool if you dont have a good signal chain.
in multitrack view before recording a track in mono you MUST change the track property for mono recording.

That should still work fine if you're saying it used to w/ ME. You prob just need to go into your soundcard settings in control panel and make sure you have you mic enabled and the setting are correct.

Vspace, I figured out how to enable the mic input for recording and now I'm coming out both channels in multi.

Manning, on board sound card? I'm using creative soundblaster 128 PCI.

Do yourself a favor and get rid of the sound blaster. Some of your problems come from trying to make this card do something it was never designed to.

Farview, ya I know it's really just a gaming soundcard. Any suggestions for one that would be a nice step-up but that's reasonably priced?

The M-Audio cards are cheap for what they are. They have features like 0 latency monitoring and well written asio drivers.
