Cool song.. Great guitarwork as usual. Everything about the music is just right. I won't comment on sound 'til I get my Tannoys back home.. these headphones suck..

Good Job Gonzo

HEY, THANKS FOR COMMENTING MESHUGGAH....

the sound..... you know, when i mastered it, i was playing it back at a pretty heavy volume.... and thought i had it nailed...

when i played it back at low volume, after i burned it, i realized it didn't sound as clear, lacked some high definition.....

this is definitely one of those that sounds better louder.........

now if i could just figure out how to brighten it up for low volume playback, without making it sound sharp or shrill at high volume playback........

BY THE WAY........

Gonzo-X:

I noticed you use much of the same equipment that I do: VS880, MesaBooger, etc. Thus, I had to check out your tune. Granted, I'm using laptop speakers to listen, so my analysis won't be very in depth.

That being said, I thought the tune was great. Lots of interesting stuff going on. Good guitar work and fun harmonies. Kind of a Vai meets classic rock meets intense vox.

Harmonizer on guitar? What other VS880 effects did ya use?

Wish I could comment more, but these speakers make it useless.

Good job,
Matt

BBB, thanks for checking it out!

880, eh? or something similar....?
mesabooger, yeah, i've had mine for quite some time....
i think it's considered an antique now! LOL

yeah, please plug some good headphones in and crank it up, then check it out! those little computer speakers make it sound like an AM radio!! ;)

no, no harmonizers on any of the guitars, just good ole multi-track!

each part was played in real time with the previous parts, and basically, i did a series of submixes to get all the harmony feedback guitars down to a stereo pair.......

the only vs effects are any reverb or delay settings.......
oh yea, and the wierd speaking part at the end, before the slashing!!

I don't know about poor Larry.

But the there's a man named Harry and he's from the countryside.... -King Diamond

You've got your thing down, I was weened on this type of stuff.

Actually an 880 EXpanded. Like your MegaBooger, I've had it for quite a while.

Yup, they make everything sound like AM radio. I can tell that mixes are really good if they sound good on these puppies. ;)

Cool. I personally hate harmonizers. They IMHO steal the musicianship from a good harmony line. Excellent job on harmonizing the bends at the end.

HEY BBB!

880 exp, i almost bought one of those, but happenned onto the 880ex.....
i'm not sure there's a huge difference......

glad you liked the harmony bends..... i really like to do that stuff.....

appreciate the kind words, i'm really bumming today, i got laid off last night. 1st time in 15 years that i haven't had a job, and it doesn't look good.......:(

I like it! Great blended sound on the vocal harmonies, and good powerful lead. I also like your originality on the drum parts -- nice way to vary your hits to keep it sounding "real."

Sorry to hear about the job!!! Well, hope you can use your feelings to crank out another kick-ass tune!

Gonzo:

Bummer about the job. :( Good luck getting a better one. However, now you have more time to jam! :D

Regarding the Exp vs the EX, The Exp doesn't include the mastering ability, the speaker simulators, or the slanted lighted display (among other things). You can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think some of these are on the EX.

all I can say is WOW! Great track! A catchy cool song with very cool guitar and vocals.... cant think of a thing I would change.

WOW....i'm sure stoked that you guys like the tune, but......

surely there's some constructive criticism in there somewhere....

it just aint all that! LOL

jet-rocker-
saw king diamond in florida in, shit, musta been 1988?!!!!
hell, i can't remember, but it's been a while. pretty trippy show, i dug it....
but no influences there......

leahkim-
yeah, i really tried to figure out a way to change the beats up enough that it never sounded repetitive, but that's real hard to do on a machine...... you'd have to never use repeating patterns, basically...... i did turn the quantize off, and intentionally put in slightly off-time beats, just to try to make it feel a little more natural, but honestly, i still think it sucks! LOL

cyanjaguar-
thanks, ranks a rot!

bbb-
yeah, you're right about the differences......
the ex is worth having just for the mastering toolkit parameters.....
it's not real mastering, but it's better than none, for the final product....... i can't afford any outboard gear, or a real mastering house, so i fake it!

noblesavage-
think harder!!! ;) surely something can be improved on, and that's what i'm looking for.......

I dont think that there is constructive critiscm for this track. Not IMO anyway.

I've always believed that a great song requires less of the mix. This is a great song and the mix is very good.

Any nitpicking at this point will just screw with the dynamics of the mix.

But if you want us to nitpick...

Hey Gonzo, great tune! Did the Devil help you write it? I always enjoy your guitar work. This tune has a Deo sounding vibe to it.

Belive me, the EX is worth having if only for the slanted, lighted display. The unlighted display is a bit of a pain and was a major complaint among the original VS-880 owners.

Still a great box.

Matt

i cant really find fault in the track because I got caught up in it. If it were a weaker song and mix, something would have stuck out that bothered me... but nothing did. I was able to listen to the song and not think of anything but the song. To change it, would be taking a risk of getting in the song's way, IMHO.

Put up something crappy, and I'll be glad to find some problems. :)

"PUT UP SOMETHING CRAPPY"........

LOL :D

noble-
i'm glad you didn't find anything then, i'll work on a new especially crappy one, promise!

BBB-
you should try to trade up. Lord, they're selling the 1880 now for what i paid for my 880ex.......

telefunken-
the devil is really overrated. He didn't come through on the giant penis thing, he didn't come through on the house of gold, hell, he didn't even give me the right answers on my driving test.

fuck him.

;)

Hey Gonzo, very cool song. I too like the harmonies on the guitars. I like the switch in sounds at 1:10. and the bridge work at 2:56. Very cool stuff there. And awesome guitar playing, makes me want to learn lead guitar. (Im just a bad rhythm player)

This may sound whacked compared to the rest of the folks here, but I wasnt that crazy about the vocals. The singing is great and right on, but maybe its the room or verbs. To my ears I wanted to hear some gated sounds with twisted echoes or something, but its only me. I think that would fit the mood of the song more thats all.

But what a cool song it is, and a great recording.
