Very cool. This may have already been mentioned (:)) but, great guitar work!

I wasn't going to say anything, because I didn't really know how to describe it (i'm a newbie), but I agree with sondriven. There is something about the vocals that makes them not feel right. It's definitely not the performance, they just don't seem to sit well in the mix. I don't know, like I said...I'm new to all this.

One more note: Damn it, where's Daybreak II (or Nightfall maybe?)?!?

Gonzo,

Great mix!

Wanted to know some tips on how you got the drums to sound so good from your Zoom. Give us other zoomies some pointers.

SONDRIVEN, ENDLESSCODA, VIRTUALSAMANA......

sondriven and coda:
yeah, i kinda agree with you on the vocal mix.....
i really wanted to do some wierd stuff on the vocals, make them a little scarier, but then i thought i should just be able to do a basically dry vocal mix, and if the vocals were good enough, they should just carry.......
and this really was just a sentiment i carried over from reading some posts on other peoples music, and how whenever they used to much reverb or delay or whatever, they'd get dissed for it......

but maybe your points make me feel more free to follow my gut on a mix issue, and not just think about pleasing everyone else....

i totally agree....
personally, i hear a gated effect on the last word of every sentence, then a trailing delay.......

the only place where i did what i really wanted with effects on voices, was on the last verse, the speaking part.....
reverse ping-ponging delay, with a flange on it.....

coda-
i'm going to steal that "nightfall" title...........:)

VIRTUALSAMANA-
i wrote this above, on the zoom........
"leahkim-
yeah, i really tried to figure out a way to change the beats up enough that it never sounded repetitive, but that's real hard to do on a machine...... you'd have to never use repeating patterns, basically...... i did turn the quantize off, and intentionally put in slightly off-time beats, just to try to make it feel a little more natural, but honestly, i still think it sucks! LOL
"

to add to that:
i run the machine itself with no eq, just straight......
but then on mix down, i add a little small room reverb, ambient, and make the room be about 16 meters......
now, i'm playing with the idea of mastering the drums by themselves, just to compress and tweak the lows and mids, but let the highs through without any tweaking at all...... don't kill the cymbals.........

i wish the zooms had seperate outs for the different pieces of the kit......
then it'd be much easier to tweak.

as far as programming, when you're listening back to the patterns you've put down, listen for anything that obviously repeats itself.........
let the pattern run, then figure out which hits are bugging you.....
then get rid of them!
and mix it up, so that it's not just a repeating 8th note on the ride or hi hat, lose one, or add a flurry, and put it somewhere where if it repeats, it's not annoying......
so much of this is subjective, you know, but it's just food for thought..........

Steal away, as long as we get to hear it! :)

Nice tune Gonzo-x,just broke in my broadband connection with it.Great dynamics and stereo spread. This tune is rockin thru my sony cans.Keep up the good work!!! Keith

thanks for the good words keith!

damn, i'm envious!
broadband, i'd give a nut....... well............. ;)

i lost my job, there i had access to dsl........
i had 2.5 gigs worth of rare mp3's (not pirated stuff, but live performances and junk like that........) and i lost all that.....
basically, i had to bail on my computer, and clean it up, and never got to download to cdr all the stuff i had......

well, i feel honored if i tainted your speakers first!!! LOL

the stereo spread was tough.....
for example, the feedback guitar section through the middle soft part, is comprised of 6 guitar tracks, all doing different things, all panned in different spots from left to right...... since i only have an 8 track, basically i had to mix the 6 tracks by themselves to a stereo pair, then mix that pair into the main music tracks after the fact..........
it's kinda hard to know how it's going to mix, without hearing it actually working on top of the other tracks..... oh, what i'd do for an 18 track!!!

EndlessCoda-
i'm working on "Nightfall" now.........

it'll have some acoustic guitar routed through a wah......... LOL
