Heavy Metal - need help with vocals/general tips on improving the mix

Hey guys!
First post on this forum, decided I'd sign up and ask some of my own questions after reading all the useful tips I've found here.

I need some tips with mixing a metal song I recorded for a buddies band, mostly vocals though, I can't seem to get them to fit without super-compressing them and then they just sound... bad.
I've dual tracked them kind of like what I do with my guitars but I'm curious as to what's the starting point on getting BIG vocals?

Extra info...

- Used a condenser mic for clean vocals and a cardioid mic for screaming
- Recorded through an M-audio fast track ultra running through an older 50$ ART tube pre-amp.

Also, would the M-audio DMP3 be a wise investment for improving vocal quality?

Have you put any reverb on the vox? They sound pretty clear right now (which is good), but if you want "big," you'll probably need some reverb or delay.
You could probably do something with EQ to give the vox more "volume" (as in space volume, not loudness), but I usually EQ vocals for clarity.

The harmony in the melodic sections is a tad loud.

GUitar tone sounds solid.
 
Mix sounds pretty good.
The singing voices do sound a bit detached from the rest.
The screaming voice parts, I found too long. Still a very good performance and a good arrangement. Guitar sound is tops.
 
Just slap some quick delay on the vocals. You don't want to wet them down with reverb because that's for suckas. A little delay will give em space but keep em clear.

The backup vocals are atrocious. Are they autotuned or something? They sound ridiculous. Drop em down.
 
Doh! I didn't add any delay to the vocals, I'll play around with that and mess around with the reverb.

Clean backup vocals were auto tuned and removed of any pitch variation which I'll take another look at, no auto tuning was done to the screaming/growling.
