Any clue as to why I at times I cannot see a wave form of a track( it just appears as 2 straight line) but it can be heard? This of course is after a few minutes and I have waited for all wave forms to show.
Jim

Trying increasing your picture cache.

It's in the aud.ini file.
PicCacheMB=20

Raise the 20 to 100 (or more if you have lots of hard drive space available).

it will only be 1 or 2 tracks. It isnt that the wave isnt expanded. It was there, then next time I open the project it isnt. I can expand the track all I want and all I see is 2 lines but like I said I can hear it. Is there a way of posting an image of my project here for you guys to see?
Thanks, Jim

There is an option in Sonar that you can select so that it will not draw the wave form to save CPU/HDD power, but you have to go out of your way to use it. I can't see it being a random thing.

Hmmmm?

It's funny as the couple waves in question will form some times and then other times they will not. If I wanted to alter picture cache, where do I go?

Who said anything about expanding the track?

What I suggested is to increase the size of your picture cache. Instructions above. You need to open the "aud.ini" file in a text editor.

I'm looking fer it now. Where the heck is it

I just openned up the project again to look for text edit and all waves are there! What the heck

You have either got some corrupted information in the Cakewalk Projects\Picture Cache or you have run out of room in that folder, (which is where that AUD.INI line above will increase the size.)

To fix it you can either -

- Click the clip and choose 'Bounce to Clips'
- Delete the contents of the Picture Cache directory and let everything rebuild when the projects are next opened
- Increase the Picture Cache size, (as above).

Merry <insert seasonal greeting of choice>!

The file is located in your Sonar directory. Surprising, huh?

A text editor is essentially any word processing program or Windows Notepad. Open the file, change the setting as described above, and resave under the same name. The default setting is 20MB, which is generally too small. I am guessing Cakwalk sets it this small to protect people with limited hard drive space - but these days its pretty much an anachronism.

Sonar stores the waveforms in a directory called Picture Cache. The size of the directory is limited by the PicCache setting in the aud.ini file. When the directory reaches its limit, Sonar will overwrite some of the other waveforms to store new information.

When you open a Sonar project which has had its waveforms overwritten, Sonar will need to redraw them again. For some reason, this can take quite awhile. By increasing the size of your cache, this will happen less often as yo will be able to store more waveforms in the directory.

Most likely it is in C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\SonarX

X = the version of Sonar you own.

Sorry if this sounds condescending, but I take it you're not very computer literate.

You could do a search in Windows Explorer for "aud.ini" in order to find it as well.

Well, yes that did sound very condescending actually. I am rather computer literate but some areas I do have less knowlage than others. I did go to my program files, cakewalk etc. I opened up a "icon" for lack of a better term. It said "AUD" . When I mouse over it it says "configuation settings" It is all text. I found picture cache, highlighted the 20 and changed it to 160,closed out. Then went to Sonar project. One thing I can tell you is when I openned up project all wave files were formed. Normally I have to wait. All audio plays. Did I do it right :)

well, the one songs for some reason has the wave files all formed when I open the project. All of the other songs are not formed until 30sec to 1 minute as is the norm. Weird, but I'll have to see if the "lost wave form" returns.

I assume you saved the file, and not just closed it, right?

That's OK. Assuming you changed the cache properly (which it sounds like you did) the waveforms should be there the next you open the project, without having to wait for a redraw.

If you continue to have problems, you might need to increase the cache further. But 160 MB should be plenty.

This is the bit where we all wish each other Merry Christmas and thank each other for all the assistance...

You're absolutely right, Q. I guess I was getting a little testy about having answered this question in the second post, and we're now up to #17.

So, my apologies for my lack of patience, and Merry Christmas.

Having answered does not mean having been understood. Merry Christmas everyone, Happy whatever else you all observe! :)

This happens to me too, on occasion. Mostly I don't care. I don't have to see a wav ...

... I hearken back to the days of tape recording, ya know, and no matter how close I'd look at that tape, I was never able to make out a wav form on it.

:D

Thanks to dachay2tnr for great advice. I'll have to edit the .ini file to avoid the problem (which isn't really a "problem" problem) too.

Kev-
