Got a SM48 at Guitar Center during the Labor Day Sale for about $30.

Slightly less clean sounding than a SM58, and less "hot" in signal output.
But for about a 1/3 of what a new '58 goes for.

Great IMHO though for karaoke, cash strapped singers,
and kids (who usually have more spending $$ than adults anyway:)).

Along with whatever else is on your area's specific store sale list...

Happy to help guys.

No on/off switch on my SM48.

What's funny is because the efective frequency response is "just" to 14 KHz,
versus 15 KHz for 57/58, don't have to EQ out so much of the presence peak.

Although IMHO have a good voice, it's prone to some sssssibilance (meant to put above wink emoticon here).

I have a SM48 with a switch and I use it for announcements and such and the occasional guest vocalist works just great.

When I have to supply live sound production in theaters, I'm always told to not have a switched microphone for the curtain talk for 8 out of 10 times the talking head will turn it off by mistake.

As I work doing theatre sound all the time , I can attest to this. I usually just cover the switch up with gaff if I have to use a switched mic.

+1 on the "switch" live issue personally. Have a Shure 548 w/switch, and it's my favorite Unidyne owned, but would use it only for home or project studio recording.

Been playing around since with the SM48, and really am liking it.
Seems suited for midrangy/warm toned type singers.

If you want more "body" to the tone, the SM58 has stronger proximity effect,
but on me a '58 tends to get muddy without extra work EQing it.
