headphones and "monitor" headphones?

See the earlier post about speakers, noise, family, and kids. Many home environments are not all that suitable for monitors.

There is no question that better tools will generally yield better results. However sometimes $ constraints and environment issues preclude their use.

If your enviorment is noisy like Dixon says here. There are some noise cancelling (I'd call them noise deading) headphones. I know that BOSE makes some. However, one note of caution about noise cancelling headphones (especially from BOSE), they emit a high end freaquency which it's audible to me. If you are going to be wearing a pair of headsets for a very long time, then you probably may not want the noise cancelling headsets.

Bose are a crap manufacturer with great marketing. A good basic set of headphones is the Sennheiser HD202 - £20 makes it cheaper than the Behringer HP3000s and much better. Sooner or later I will try some of Harvey's phones.

They are great! I like them for what they are ($30 phones). I've kept them on my head for about an hour (not to test it, just using them) and I've to say that my ears (while a little annoyed with me) didn't actually hurt (like the do with my consumer Sony Headphones). My head didn't actually hurt either. Now, they are not the most comfortable headphones out there but they are better than my crapy Sony MDR-V250. I've yet to try any Sennheiser or Beyer. I've tried some of the other Sony Headphones (Can't remember the model but they say STUDIO HEADPHONES at the top of the headband), and they are a little more comfortable. However, that being said the Sony that I tired had years of use and abuse and they didn't take it too well either.

Cool! I have some Sennheiser HD280s now which are excellent, but every so often I need a pair or two of cheap ones and I won't buy the HD202s again because the cable is too thin and not covered by the warranty. That said, I've had mine a year with no trouble.

I use Behringer Headphones for recording rap artists that have a habit of dropping them to the floor when they're done.

I'd drop them to the floor, and escort them out.

I keep hearing this shit about people breaking headphones and other gear. Motherfuckers got 1 chance and 1 only. You mistreat my gear, you'll be told. Do it again, you're gone.

Since, I'm the only one I record right now I have no issues. However, I do get annoyed with myself when I run into the mic by mistake. :)

I think I saw the HD202 the other day, and yeah the cable was thinner than my consumer Sony Headphones. The BOSE you like so much also have a very thin cable.
I don't know there was a guy raving about the BOSE, something about there is space for his ears. I told him, that was for pussies. :D
However, he liked it because they have that noise cancelling deal (which you have to turn on & off - hmm makes you wonder why?).

I'm telling you, Bose talk their products up well but they don't follow through.

When I bought a set of HD202s they had a two year warranty so I didn't think it'd be a problem but lo and behold .... the wire is not covered! Boo.

Hey I know this guy who sells good heaphones, and everything is covered. The headphones have a weird name like MoreThem, MoreUs, MoreSomething. The deluxe model is $35 with shipping and get this, because they are the deluxe model it comes with one side labeled Left (in blue appropriately so) and the other side labeled Right (in red - imagine that).
Anyway, this really old, crusty, nice guy who sells these will replace them in full (with a small fee). His name is something Gerst.
Anyway, his website if floating around here somewhere, you may want to do a search. :D :D :D :D :D

LOL!! Spam!!!!

I was on the verge of sending for some of Harvey's phones when I bought the 202s - I got suckered whilst in the music shop buying something else (always the way).

I'm still gonna get some because all his headphones are assembled by blonde virgins. Or at least that's what he told me.

Yeah, I stopped going to GW 'cause I want to buy everything. My MXL V67G was an impulse buy, can't wait 'till it gets here.

LOL!!! Ha ha ha. I didn't know about the blonde virgins. I'll enjoy wearing them even more now.

Monitor headphones usually have an impedence of several hundred ohms, while "standard" headphones usually have 32-64ohms.

You need a fairly powerful headphone amp to drive monitor cans, because of the insane the impedence. I hear that the purpose of so-called monitor 'phones is so that you can plug it into low impedence-highoutput sources(poweramplifiers) and not blow the phones. For monitoring purposes I guess :)

If you don't plan on doing that, get lower impedence cans.

Could you imagine...never having to worry about blowing your headphones...just year ears!

Hey, I don't lie. Here's a picture from the 2004 NAMM show, showing my two 18 year old blond virgins (at least, that's what they put down on their job applications).

Who could argue with that? They certainly look trustworty, especially standing next to that suspicious Elmo character. :D

I have a pair of akg k240df's. They are supposed to me flat response but they suck to try and mix with. I have to say I love them for recording vocal tracks. They have an open back and I can record with both cans on. Makes it much easier to get into the recording.

F.S.
