headphone / speakers (monitors)

I know you shouldn't mix with headphones - but anyway:

I can get a mix that sounds pretty good and punchy thru headphones but quite weak thru anykind of speakers.
I guess this has something to do with stereo-field and how much information gets to each of the listeners ear... am I right?

So in which direction do I have to work to get the mix sounding the way it sounds thru headphones?

Bruce, Im sure he appreciates your kindness....six, take the advice of your first statement and dont do it.....headphones are the worst thing to mix on...go ahead and knock yourself out recording with them, headphones are pretty essential for that....good studio monitors are ideal, but a home stereo and speakers with the eq flat will give you somewhat of a fighting chance over headphones...but the only way your are gonna get punchy and a realitic stereo spread is good monitors....I dont have good monitors myself, but I'm not expecting a killer mix either...but they are next on my list....
 
six, six, six .... use both, you can't do without either ! Headphones are generally not for mixing. People use headphones for leak prevention during tracking, listening to fine details and keeping their wives.
 
I'd have to agree. You need both the headphones and monitors. I have yet to meet someone who turned out a technically sound mix using just headphones.
 
I totally agree headphones are not ideal - but hey! if you have too.........
There are good studio headphones available which will give you an accurate sound, like for instance Audio Technica's ATH-M40fs , which are headphones especially made for mixing / monitoring
