I've decided on purchasing the Beyer Dynamic DT770s headphones for drum monitoring. My board has a weak headphone output. If I'm going to buy a headphone amp I want the best one I can find. I want it LOUD and Clean! What is the best, loudest and cleanest headphone amp? Also, can a regular amplifier be used with headphones? And if so how would it be hooked up? Are there any special requirements as to the hookup? Will this play louder than a headphone amp? I would think so but maybe I'm wrong. Would a regular amp use all the watts for the headphones? Maybe this is the way I should go. If you can give me a couple of choices that would work I would be grateful. I'm looking to spend around $600 or less. Thanks for the help.

Excellent choice on the headphones! I have a pair of my own and I love them. Even though they are broken. :( Think I blew one of the speakers inside. It crackles when I put them too loud.

So be carefull not to break 'em.

The headphones are very good, I love their sound, but they aren't all that closed. If you're doing drums with it, well... If you beat rather hard, I'd have a look at the sennheiser HD25 (not sure about the number though). They seemed very closed to me when I tried them in the shop.

As for the amp, I have no idea. I'm on a budget, and I've got the cheapest headphoneamp I found. Which was a leem. (I think that's dutch for Rolls. )

I have the little Rolls headphone amp.About $80,with a single stereo input and 4 stereo outputs, each with its own volume control. It does get very loud and stays clean too.Behringer has a model in the same price range but I haven't tried it.The little Rolls units works great however.

I use the OZ-Audio HR-4 -- it is both loud AND very clean!

I've got the cheap ole Behringer 4400. If you listen consistently any louder than these will do, you won't be listening long - you'll be deaf. It's a clean unit with 4 amps - 12 outputs. I don't see any sense in wasting that kinda money on a headphone amp when you've got several good clean, loud models for $100 or so.

The Behringer HA4400 is a very decent headphone amp. I previously used a small Rolls - which did the job fine - but the routing capabilities on the 4400 make it a very good value.

James, you might want to look at the HM-6 - next step up from Bear's, - more outs, more inputs to each mix, same company (Mackie offshoot if I remember correctly) The only possible downside besides $100 more would be if you want rack mount. Here-s a link/price... Steve
