Impedance ?

Resurrecting this thread as I am finally about to get a Behringer HA4600. My question is those who have had sound quality issues what impedance headphones did you use ? I have Beyer DT100s 400ohm ( OK as greater than 100 ohm)and want also to use a cheap pair of Sonys that are 32 ohm - these may make the unit fail.

If one can't use cheap cans then naturally the saving on the HA4600 will be offset buying multiple pairs of 400 ohm DT100 !!

Experiences please !

Cheers

I have been using the 4400 with the Sony MDR 7506 that have a pretty low <100 ohm and the amp works well. I sometimes plug AKG 240 into the same amp to monitor what the musician is listening to and the amp still sounds fine.

I've got three of the little Rolls HA43's (four channel) and two of the Fostex PA5's (five channels). In my opinion doing side by side listening the Rolls actually sounds better. They both have about the same amount of gain, but the Rollls seems a bit punchier.

In addition, the Fostex's are a little flimsy. On one only 4 out of five channels are working, and on the other the plastic power slider switch fell off, so now it is permanently on when I plug it in.

I lent a couple of the Rolls to a feloow engineer who has a pretty fancy studio for a remote recording he was doing. When he returned them, he said "I don't know why I bothered with buying all my fancy headphone amps... that Rolls sounds just as good!"

As always, YMMV.

By the way, if you just need an extra single headphoine preamp, there's nothing wrong with using one of those baby sub-$100 mixers like the Behringer. That way you even get EQ.

I usually run my headphone mixers for various stereo cue mixes (for the musicians) off of pairs of aux sends from my board. I think most headphone mixers are looking for line level signal.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Well I took the plunge and got the Behringer Powerplay HA4600. So far works fine, DT100 400ohm on channel 1 and 32ohm Sony cans on channel two. Running 3 Metre long unbalanced monos into it from my (cough) Isis without noise issues - the unit is as clean as the Spirit Folio I was using before to power the cans.

I'll report if it croaks etc :D

I know this is an old thread but I'll post what I got too...

I just use the little 4 output Rolls headphone amp (I think I paid like 25$ for it) and a pair of AKG headphones that I also paid 25$ for just a few weeks ago as a matter of fact at a GC sale. I only use it for basic tracking so it doesn't have to be fancy and it works great for me.

God Bless!
