Ok here is the deal. I am very new at this whole recording game, produciing is another story. I have a MOTO 828, Alesis 16 studio mixer, among other toys these are probably all i need to mention with the problem I am having. I am recording my band and just recently got a decent recording with the drums, bass and guitar(clean). Tell me if this is how you would do this in my situation. I have a small apt.. So I line in the bass and guitars threw the amp direct, the drums all miked up going stero xlr to the interface. I record one pass with the bass and guitars. Another pass with just the drums in the room, so at least i can adjust eq,limiters and compressor later on with as little room noise as possiblle in this enviorment. All this works great until I get to a number with distorion on the guitars. Now I know you should always records as clean and dry as possible, but guitar distorion?!?! I am using DP and the pre amp effects for distorion suck!! Anyway my final product is a guitar that sounds like a chain saw... eq is not helping no level settings are helping at all.. it sounds like I am getting a redline recording, but my input levels say elsewise... anyone??? Do I need a direct box or something???
P.s the only way I get a decent sound is to line a pedal straight threw my mixer and have the guitarist play threw the studio monitors...but its a pain in the ass..

Direct signals are wild and hard to tame from my experience. I also remember something about a Hughes and Kettner redbox..... arrrggg, I could rermember more if I wasn't drunk right now.

All I will say is buy a Line 6 P.O.D. It sound very accurate to a real cab!! It is only $250 right now so pick one up.

do i run from the amp to the box? or just straight to the box...?

Do you mean the POD? All you do is plug your guitar into the POD and plug the POD into the mixer. Bypass the preamps on the mixer because the POD has it's own preamp. You don't need to use your amp for the POD. THe POD has distortion, EQ and 16 effects.
