Having problems getting started...

I'm getting started recording at home, but I'm having problems. I don't want anything real professional, I just write songs at want to lay down some acoustic tracks. Here is what I have:

I bought a 64-bit, 4.00 GB Toshiba laptop. I also have a Tascam US-122L interface and the old Cool Edit Pro software. It sounds like it should work, but when I use cool edit pro nothing gets picked up. Since that didn't work I downloaded Audacity, but that only recorded on the left side. I'm guessing that Cool Edit Pro isn't made for 64-bit, but what kind of software would you guys recommend for my kind of setup?

Audacity may actually be working, since it recorded, but another more popular program you might like is Reaper. There actually is a forum here on thei BBS for it.
 
Try REAPER. Its free for 30 days and is compatible with 64-bit. Cool Edit is ancient software. The problem you are having with audacity sounds to me like you are recording a stereo track with inputs set to mono. Check you I/O.
 
In Cool Edit you might want to double check the Options > Device Properties and Options > Device Order settings to make sure your interface is properly selected.

Having said that, Reaper is still pretty cool software. Might be worth a look.
 
Do yourself a favor and try this.......

Mixcraft 5 - Affordable multi-track audio and MIDI recording software.

VERY simple to use and, it's fully functional. After the 14 days, you lose the ability to mixdown and burn CD's or, buy the license and get the unlock codes.

I tried Audacity, Reaper and N-Track as well and settled on this one.

BTW....the online support forum is excellent! This program is a REAL sleeper. It's very much like Garage Band but, for the PC.
