Have you given your home studio a name?

Commercial studios have names. Have you named your home studio? If so, what is it, and is there any significance to the name? I'm a newbie and am just assembling my bedroom studio, and although it may seem silly to give a name to a solo/hobbyist recording room, why the hell not? I can even put Recorded at *Studio Name* on the CD jacket (when I eventually produce it). :)

So, as for mine, it's going to be Queen's Meadow Studio. I chose this name because about 35 years ago, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and one of her daughters (and their entourage) cross-country skied across the forest clearing where I built my log house 21 years ago. After Juliana did the ski thing, the locals referred to the clearing as Queen's Meadow.

What's your story?
 
The office.

No story. It's my office!.......... ;)

Well,... when I did puter field repair, it was my office, where my computer is, on which I'd do lots of paperwork, eh, key entry. I don't do that any more, though. The only other name might be the friggin mess I call my studio! :eek:
 
The Dungeon. My home is pushing 100 years old and when I was first setting up downstairs it looked very much like a dungeon. Plus I was going through a divorce and the ex was still here so I spent a LOT of time in the dungeon. The name stuck.
 
Madhouse Studios. Named after a band I was once in that used to practice in what is now the tracking room. (Most Google searches will give you anime results. That's not me.)

Whoa! Track, how wierd that is. The girlfriend here always asks me, "Are you retreating to your dungeon tonight?". Answer is, "Yup". ;)
 
My home studio is called "Midimonkey Productions, Inc."

Most of the composing I do is through midi, everything is sync'd via midi, etc.

And I'm a "monkey" when it comes to my ability to use it :)
 
I came up with a name. But I don’t want to get into any legal trouble. What do I need to do to protect the name or see If anyone else has the same name before I print up logos, business cards……..ect.

Its about $300 to file one logo/name, and about $100 for each additional registration if you do them at the same time.

You want to register your co name, logo, etc.

You should definitely start with a national trademark search to avoid getting sued. You should also do a trademark search in your state.

As for protecting your own name, it's a little more complicated, since you can only get a federal trademark (probably technically a service mark for a studio) if you use it in interstate commerce. Like if you advertised regionally or nationally, or did mixing for clients obtained via internet, etc. If you are just a local studio, it might be tricky proving interstate use.

You can protect your name in your state by forming a business using that name. In many states that will get you automatic exclusive use of of the corporate name, provided it doesn't conflict with an existing business or mark.

If you don't intend to incorporate or form an LLC, then you will need to file a business name with your local government.

You can also assert a trademark merely by using the TM symbol, or you can register for a state trademark.

Don't forgot to check if the domain name is available--it's really tough to get good domain names these days. After much brainstorming, I found a six-letter English language word that was unclaimed :cool:

If you do all of the above, you should be safe :)

PS I'm "The Vineyard", which I don't use commercially and thus claim no rights. My prospective mobile recording search has a name (the six letter word one), but it's a secret (shhhh . . .)

Well, you had to go and name yourself "Monster Cable Studios", so it's your own fault ;)

If I named it that, I'd WANT to be sued. :D Hey. Wait a minute......The Dungeon Monster........Hmmmmm.............
 
I claim no legal rights (the disclaimer), but I call my place "Bobby Llama Studio".

My 17-year old daughter used to call everyone "Bob", and if you pissed her off you were a "llama", so, since I always seemed to be on her dark side (at least that particular year), the name Bobby Llama came into being.

My avatar is my studio logo, with the words "The Bobby Llama" which are barely legible. If I ever get serious about making money or advertising the studio I will go through the legal stuff to see what shakes out.

Rabbit in the Room Productions. I'll give you one hint why that name. I have a pet who lives in the studio...
 
Gallant Productions (pronounced like "want" vs. "rant")

I was raised to respect my elders, open doors for ladies, etc. etc - A well groomed older lady once commented " My aren't you a "gallant gentleman" - and the word "gallant" simply appealed to me.

It's pretentious and prestigious at the same time :D
