Have I over compressed....

I added compression at 2 stages of mastering. The first was right after mixdown and it was pretty light. I set my threashold just slightly lower than my peaks...probably less than 2 or 3db lower, my ratio around 6:1. Then I did a little EQ'ing and noise reduction. Then I compressed it again...this time, I set the threashold at -1db...so the peaks would just hit it but I set the ratio at 12:1. I'd never claim to be a mastering engineer and even suggested that the band have it done by a pro but they said that they wanted me to do it if it would save them a little $$$.

anyway...did I over do it???

Love; Hate; Lust; Disgust

thanks for the listen...

I like how it sounds.....the bass has a good pocket, and really carries that sound area well. Drums seem good, and guitars are pretty cool. I'd say if they are happy, and it saves them some bucks, cool. Tune seems very good to me.

Mastering is really tricky. Took me about a year of practicing to train my ears to know what works and what doesnt.
Getting to your monitors and training your ears are the 2 crucial factors of getting goody at mastering.

The bass sounded squased when i first came in, Could be from the micing or compression at mastering.
Imnot sure if it sounds too compressed, but to me it does sound a little sqaushed as if the dynamics want to break through a bit more, but cant.

I would ask Massive Mastering about this one.

must be from compression since we DI'ed the bass....

maybe Ill get lucky and he will chime in....

thanks guys....anyone else???

If you guys want to hear it before the second round of compression ill post it...

Sounds good. I think multiple stage peak limiting is generally very effective when using a processor that's pretty transparent when the gain reduction isn't actually happening.

I'm still learning about compresson and know almost nothing about mastering except what I've read.

I can hear the effect of the compression as compared to other material I've heard posted here. It sort of smooths out all the peaks and evens out the tune.

And I like the tune overall......

:D

Sounds with a lot of "pressure".

And (what is important),far from overcompressed. I can feel the dinamics in voice , rithmn sections ...

Sounds VERY GOOD

Dittos to that. That book and Modern Recording Techniques by David Miles Huber are a must have in every ME's library.

Personally, it sounds a bit too compressed for my taste. Do you have a copy without final compression, and if so can you post it? If this is just for fun then it doesn't really matter, however if this is for serious presentation, I would urge the band to turn the uncompressed final mix over to a mastering engineer, especially in light of your not having any mastering experience.

I am happy to master your track free of charge.
If you send me the wave file rather than an MP3 so no quality is lost.

You can send large files with www.yousendit.com

If you are interested PM me.

well...I have recorded 10 songs for them and they are discussing 2 or 3 more. I would really hate to give them a final disk with 9 unmastered tracks and 1 mastered....

sounds good to me!

I thought it sounded very tight and clean! I like the quick double-kicks and the slashing muted riff!!
